I would like to know how king Saul counted the people to find that his son Jonathan was missing from the people? Especially since there were ambiguous rules to counting the people according to the law. Any ideas?

He delegated his officers to muster the troops, and count each of their units. Jonathan and his armor bearer were both soldiers who were found to be missing

Much the same way it would be done today.

"fall in" and the troops come in....or like with was done in class; "anderson" "here" "bailey" "here" "jonathon"......*crickets*...."Jonathon"........Nope not around. Or, if it was an entire town, by a town census type counting. There are many ways this could be done, but I wasn't there to know exactly how. My best guess, since I am fairly sure Willie was correct in that he was a soldier or whatever they called it back then, that it was a more militant style of counting. Sorry I can't be more help here. I don't think the Bible specifies the hows exactly here, but I imagine, with the technology available back then, this process took a day or three to complete.

Although, I don't think the exact method is as important as the meaning of the writing, I was not necessarily searching for the same understanding, when I searched, as you were when you searched.
Peace!!

This is a good question for the Bible Discussion Forum (or, as I like to call it, "Bicker and Debate Forever").

As Saul was not particularly careful about being faithful to God, I suspect he just did whatever he felt like doing, regardless of what the Law said. :)

keeping roll at a military camp (1 Samuel 14:16-18) is not the same as taking a census of the entire people, which was already a part of the law (Exodus 30:11-16), at the time David later did it (1 Chronicles 21), outside the law, not trusting in God but in the strength of his army.
