I heard this watching Joseph Prince.
"You are a dirty glass, you do not remove the dirt, because the glass is still unclean. Let the glass overflow with "water" forever, and it will be made clean".
I like this analogy of receiving the Holy Spirit and the Grace of God through Jesus Christ.
Works, are trying to remove the dirt and make "clean".
But in my opinion, turning on the tap, is accepting and following Jesus Christ.
But works done through Christ, happen with a changed heart by realising connections, further than the words stated. E,g,
"Do onto others as you would have done on to you". Extends, when you think on the meaning, pray on the meaning and direction, and honour your obligation to follow it.
If the glass is flowing with water and dirt is thrown in, it is still made clean, continuously. With the abundance of "water".
