I think he deserves to be ridiculed and looked down upon for trying to get the good people of his congregation to fall for this ridiculous scheme of his. That's people's hard-earned money and he is taking advantage of their faith and giving them harmful advice by telling them to take money out of their 401k!
Pastor is a serious whack job for sure.

Run, do not walk, to the nearest exit.

This pastor is a con man. This church is a sham.

Get out NOW. I wouldn't even bother responding.

Actually it's "now...run, Barry, run."
Inside joke for Flash fans.

yes, I wanted to leave but at the time of my posting my husband was still wanting to give it a chance to keep from church hopping. I wanted to see if my thoughts were justified. I didn't give his name or the church name. You judged me wrongly, but that's ok! I respect your opinion.
Gossiping isn't about the other person. It's about making me feel better about myself. Better than the person. The only purpose of having a name for the subject of my I'm-better is so others will enjoy how much better I am and how much better they are. That's what this thread was about. I'm an expert on the subject. It's my sin area.

I read something from Spurgeon today that shows OUR problem:

“Before destruction the heart of man is haughty.”
Pro_18:12

It is an old and common saying, that “coming events cast their shadows before them;” the wise man teaches us that a haughty heart is the prophetic prelude of evil. Pride is as safely the sign of destruction as the change of mercury in the weather-glass is the sign of rain; and far more infallibly so than that. When men have ridden the high horse, destruction has always overtaken them. Let David’s aching heart show that there is an eclipse of a man’s glory when he dotes upon his own greatness. 2Sa_24:10. See Nebuchadnezzar, the mighty builder of Babylon, creeping on the earth, devouring grass like oxen, until his nails had grown like bird’s claws, and his hair like eagle’s feathers. Dan_4:33. Pride made the boaster a beast, as once before it made an angel a devil. God hates high looks, and never fails to bring them down. All the arrows of God are aimed at proud hearts. O Christian, is thine heart haughty this evening? For pride can get into the Christian’s heart as well as into the sinner’s; it can delude him into dreaming that he is “rich and increased in goods, and hath need of nothing.” Art thou glorying in thy graces or thy talents? Art thou proud of thyself, that thou hast had holy frames and sweet experiences? Mark thee, reader, there is a destruction coming to thee also. Thy flaunting poppies of self-conceit will be pulled up by the roots, thy mushroom graces will wither in the burning heat, and thy self-sufficiency shall become as straw for the dunghill. If we forget to live at the foot of the cross in deepest lowliness of spirit, God will not forget to make us smart under his rod. A destruction will come to thee, O unduly exalted believer, the destruction of thy joys and of thy comforts, though there can be no destruction of thy soul. Wherefore, “He that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord.”

Wrong....gossiping is talking about someone to a person who isn't either part of the problem or part of the solution.

it's taken me many years to understand exactly what 'gossiping' really is, and this is what
I have found;
it was mostly about what I 'needed' and thought I could 'get' but in reality,
it was a pitiful lack on my part and eventually Jesus revealed to me that He was all that I
really needed to get me through any situation that came my way, without involving anyone else...

I dont really talk about my problems to people anymore. I used too. In fact I paid a counselor thousands of dollars to hear my drivel. Now it even sounds like trivial whining to me and I can't stand the sound of it.

I am so glad you left. In Canada, a church building has to be in the name of the church. The pastor's name is never allowed to be on the title. I realize things might be different in the US. However, our laws were made to prevent pastor's like this from stealing from the members and taking their pension plans away.

This pastor is so out of line, he really does need to be reported. I do agree that someone in the congregation needs to talk with him. I was in a church from 2005-2011 and the pastor was really on track, preaching the bible, discipling people and suddenly, he went totally off track. Gradually, he pushed out members who had been there longer than him and were confronting him and not letting him rubber stamp everything he wanted to do. Finally, there were so few members, he had to take a part time job driving a school bus. Last I heard, the final few members had left.

BUT, I will say this, he never tried to steal the money of the members of the church. I never even heard him preach on tithing, for that matter. Of course, the church, although run autonomously, was a member of a Baptist convention. As members, we needed to bring in the convention people to give him direction, or direct us to remove him as pastor.

Well, I hope you enjoy your new church!

I keep wondering why the pastor was not with you at the hospital for even a short time. Find a church where the pastor is caring for the needs of the congregation and involved with each family in a personal way. That is why smaller is better many times.

The pastor involved could use a lot of prayer by the people who love him. Prayers for him to be guided by the Holy Spirit in his role of shepherding the people, and for his spiritual growth. Prayers that would not be judgmental, but prayers that every pastor could use.
