I really don't think God wants us to be perfect. He knows we can never be.

From my perspective, I think He just wants us making progress.

If you are making steady progress I think that is all God demands. Though I project He hopes for greater progress.

I make slow progress on occasion. But I am sure there is room for improvement.

If you are making progress, be satisfied with that for now.

I'd say try to move in together if you haven't already and start living as husband and wife. A lot of these separations to get some space turn into divorce. Separation can pick up a momentum of it's own.
