Default How long have you gone without hearing from God?

I am new here and I hope I am posting in the right place.
Please forgive me if I have not.
And maybe point me the way.

I am asking how long have you gone without hearing from God, because at one point for me, it was several months!

Since I am single, (10 years now) have no Christian family or friends, (hence why I am on this site)
I consider Jesus my only friend, the only person who truly loves me, understands me, and who will never leave me.

Is it normal to have this in our walk with the Lord?
For me it was down right scarey!

Has anyone else experienced this? How long did it last? What did you learn through that time?

    Just wondering ?

I've literally gone my whole life without literally hearing from God .. But of course, He speaks to us through his written word and Holy Spirit. Sometimes it helps to pray for wisdom and understanding, and sometimes its necessary to quiet ourselves in order to hear. With myself, its usually not a case of God not communicating, but me not listening.

    Hi Dan,
I know exactly what you mean.
I have not literally heard from God in a audible voice either.

Its only through prayer, reading the Word, and paying attention to my surroundings and what is going on, that I do hear.
In that still soft voice, that only He has, that His truth is revealed of what He is up to.

What I learned, was amazing to me, and an eye opener.

Being single as long as I have been, and of course one of my prayers was for that " mate," helper" that He wanted for me, if He wanted that for me, where I am now in my walk.

He help me realize that if I had a mate, that I have the tendency to put all I am into that person.
What I mean to say is:
My walk is very close to Him being single, and He knew, in His wisdom and then I knew instantly that I would put that person first not Him.
That this silence is what it would be like for me, if I had that special someone in my life.

That I was not ready to have that person in my life, until I get that part of HIM first in ALL.
    Even in marriage, dating, etc.
I was so excited to learn this, the smile was back on my face, and I could continue on.
To know without a doubt, He has me right in the palm of His hand, that I am not alone.

I knew immediately I would rather be single my entire life in this flesh suit, than one day without Him.
I knew I had to get my priorities in order, Him first no matter who or what.

I cant tell you the peace I felt! Nothing like it.

Thank you Dan for responding, I really appreciate the correspondence.

I have wandered through some dry desert at times in my spiritual walk but always end up in an oasis of shade and refreshment. Usually what I learn is to rely on God and not myself.

I would go insane if i didn't hear him for so long. again, i havent been a christian for too long yet but i think that usually happens due to some kind of demonic interference. whether its you, someone you are around enough, or just the place you are at and the people there. I suppose there are other reasons but those are the only ones i can think of. Also you can hear from God in an audible voice every day. I do. You just need to learn how to hear him. I can teah you how if you want.

Just as long as it takes me to open and read the Bible to hear from him. If I don't do that? I don't hear him. As long as I don't do that, I don't hear him. His words are in his book.

If you're learning lack of hearing from God is demonic interference from your church, find a new church. If you're reading that somewhere, throw out whatever you're reading. If you're hearing that from whomever your fellowshipping with, find others to fellowship. Listening tot that stuff will stunt your growth in the Lord.

And that voice you're hearing? 50/50, but good chance you're listening to yourself.

Are you sure about that? I can prove it can't.

Read Job and notice, Lucifer has to go to the Lord to get permission to mess with God's kids. Thinking Satan is stronger than God is something like thinking Sheldon Cooper (character in The Big Bang Theory) could take on an entire professional football team. God is not only bigger, better, and stronger, he is also sovereign. Nothing happens to you without God's say-so.

And frankly, I thought the same as you when I was young, but slowly realized it was me, not God. And the realized thingy was directly connected to making some humongous blunders that embarrass and horrify me until this day.

I get Satan and his horde mess with us, but never enough that God can't overcome it. AND, if God is truly talking to you, why can't he get beyond some minor morons like demons?

Ultimately, God wants us to learn two things in this life:
    1. Yes, he really, really loves you, no matter what.
    2. Trust him!

Why would he let either of those two lessons be left out in the air because of demonic interference? And how do you learn to trust him if he talks to you every day? Because I can't trust God talks to me (verbally) every day, I'm stuck trusting what he said in his book. That's good. Solid foundation. But talk to me? Wasn't any foundation! It kept leading me down wrong paths that, at best, lead to dead ends with no purpose. And, boy! I really wish that was the worst that happened, because I hurt dear friends thinking I heard from God. And in trusting me, until they learned better, they were left with the impression they were trusting God. NOT good!

well it doesn't affect God's voice, it affects how well i can hear him. He knows he can't take on God but God lets him take me on,basically. If you don't believe so, that's ok.

I could address the rest of that but i've tried many times before with people who feel the same about this as you do. It always ends the same. It doesn't matter what i say, you won't believe it because your mind is made up. So I pray you see it my way because it doesnt eliminate faith by any means. I used to hear the wrong voice and that eliminated faith among other things. Anyway God bless, and Have a nice day.

Actually for the first three years that is how it was for me except for people in this site and even now though I now have friends and family that love me I am the only one who is a Christian and often times I do feel as if he is the only one here at my house who really understands me and is always there for me.
It isn't how I would prefer to be but I have learned and grown quite a lot from it, sometimes it seems like it's him and I going to the mountains as student and teacher

    Hello my friend!

I understand your question completely. Having been a loner since childhood and now in my 70's. After 40 years as a born again, baptized in the Holy Spirit believer I've learned more of how to wait on Him. He NEVER stops working in you. He's done more in the past year and a half in my life than I can say. He's working something in you. When He has something to say to you he'll certainly speak.

Consider that He speaks in so many ways. Every time you are impressed with a verse of scripture it is the spirit of the Lord. He promised that His sheep would know own His voice. I'm certain that you are not filled with, baptized in His Holy Spirit. It makes a difference that I cannot describe. Power for living, to do battle in the Heavenlies, to overcome obstacles and afflictions. To communicate the gospel and on and on. Seek the Lord Jesus about this and ponder acts chapter 19. Do not let the teachings and traditions of a denominational body influence you against the word of the Bible.

Malachi 3:6 (NKJV) "For I am the Lord, I do not change; Therefore you are not consumed, O sons of Jacob.

    He DOES NOT CHANGE.

What did God say about His communications with us?
Psalms 50:3 (NKJV) Our God shall come, and shall not keep silent; A fire shall devour before Him, And it shall be very tempestuous all around Him.

Psalms 35:22 (NKJV) This You have seen, O Lord; Do not keep silence. O Lord, do not be far from me.

Consider that He speaks through events and happenings also. Through the occurrences of seemingly trivial events. Without the power and discernment that is given you with the baptism of the Holy Spirit you will miss much of what the Lord has to say to you.

    It is said that in this verse of scripture;

Isaiah 8:11 (NKJV) For the Lord spoke thus to me with a strong hand, and instructed me that I should not walk in the way of this people...

The phrase "strong hand" means circumstances.

I don't know whether you fast or not but fasting combined with prayer and study of the Bible is a good way to seek His face, to earnestly request His guidance and His magnified presence. Let not your heart be troubled and don't let it be afraid the good Master says to us.

    Many times during or after a prayerful fast the Holy Spirit will visit you with a dream or vision. Consider these verses in the book of Job;

    Job 33:14-17 (NKJV)
14 For God may speak in one way, or in another, Yet man does not perceive it.
15 In a dream, in a vision of the night, When deep sleep falls upon men, While slumbering on their beds,
16 Then He opens the ears of men, And seals their instruction.
17 In order to turn man from his deed, And conceal pride from man,

I hope that something of what I've discussed here here has or will speak to your heart. And I believe that I have the Holy Spirit of God also.

Press into Him evermore and know He will come and not keep silent. Amen.

I really didn't think you'd agree with me yet. Give it a couple of decades or so. (Unless you're a faster learner than I am... which is likely because I'm slooooooooooooow. lol)

I think I might know what you are relating. He goes silent for me for some length of time. He always comes back to my senses again. But it is scary until it happens a few times and you learn to not panic and that He hasn't abandoned you.

I have always seen it as a fast He puts me on (but in spirit).

I hear from God all the time, I have always been this way since a child, through the dark times and the good times. Probably one of the earliest things he told me as a child was to never let my heart be broken (to have the 'belief' of it, which is a lie). What it meant is that even through the hard times, the heart break, of which I experienced a massive proportion of etc. never change my moral standing, and childlike purity of heart, my born mind set, and belief system. So even though like everyone else, I fail many times to do the right thing, I stumble, I fall, I have always retained the purity in my heart to guide me, and to guide others, when I get back on my feet. The purity is something many people push right to the back of what's important, most often when they go through teenage years, or go through their first heart breaks. I see many people who's heart have been overcome by their own mind and replaced by their presumed identity and it saddens me.

The main symptom of this, is they can never speak about love directly, or at least it makes them feel very awkward to do so.

It is very easy to simply go down the wide path of indirect ways of poetry, or religious thinking, but it's not the same as just being you, from your heart with all that you have come to understand, or with all that you really want to express, without any superficial icing to the cake.

"Be still and know that I am God"

I've always been someone who engages in quieting my mind. While we have a turbulence of thoughts, whether positive or negative, we never really get to hear God above ourself. God is the quietest voice you can imagine, so if you have no space in your mind to hear the quietest sound, you cannot hear God.

Once upon a time God came out of nowhere, for no reason, and said climb a mountain. So even though I didn't have a car, I found a way, and got up 4am the next day and went to climb a mountain. I trusted the words. And what was there to gain from it? I didn't really feel a sense of achievement, when I climbed that mountain there were particularly interesting people I met along that path that never existed any other time I pushed myself to go climb a mountain. The main thing I learnt was that when you listen to God, and you have faith and just do it, instead of think 'well that's crazy' or any other way we might shun God like when you might argue with someone and God says 'be kind', we find real peace. A peace we could never have planned.

You can't plan peace, but if you listen to God, God knows how to bring peace, in a way that you could never have imagined. You just have to have faith.

At certain points in my life, and it has been a while since the last time, God has spoken through me. I don't know I can explain that to you really, but, it's like becoming an instrument or translator. I remember once having one of these moments, talking to a drug addict, and I can't really remember what I said (almost as if the memory of it is like trying to remember what you said in a dream), but it was short and to the point in a very peaceful kind of way, and he quit drugs. In fact the story of how his life changed in the coming weeks was a true blessing in itself.

I miss being a blessing like that to people. I have had many struggles in the last fews years. When I am in my struggles I feel alone in it. And what I mean is, where are the people who want to help? Plenty of people say, ask God, read the Bible, see a counsellor, etc. as if to shun helping. But when I was a blessing to people, and saw someone in need, it just felt natural to forget about myself and help. In my struggles that is something which is taken advantage of. I feel I am in this struggle to learn something, but I have not learnt it yet.

We speak to God through prayer, and He speaks to us through the Word- so if you have not heard from Him, are you not reading? God will never leave or forsake His child, but His child can forsake Him.

I heard a story once, and find it to be true...

There was this married couple, and the husband was always the one to drive their truck when they went places together. One day they were driving along, and she said, "You know, we used to be really close, now we hardly ever talk. We used to sit together, snuggling as we drove." He said "I'm not the one who moved." She is the one who quit talking, she is the one who scooted over to the passenger seat. The church is the bride of Christ, if the church member is estranged from the Groom, it is not by His doing.

Do you not have a church family? Because Jesus said "I tell you the truth, whoever leaves father or mother, sister or brother, etc. for My sake will receive many times more." And "Whoever does the Will of My Father is my mother, sister, brother, etc." To be a lone Christian, you'd have to like be vanished to a deserted island or something- like John who wrote down the words of Revelation. I'm glad you're here, hope you find some good Christian friends here. You can talk to me whenever you like.
