Hi everyone,

As a single person, I always hear the advice, 'Marry your best friend."

So, I want to ask you for your perspective as a married (or maybe formerly married) person: did you marry your best friend? Were they your best friend first or did you fall in love first and then that person became your best friend? Or maybe your spouse is NOT your best friend?

How is it working out or how did it end up?

Please, share your wisdom with us who are still waiting :).

I used to be married. No, i didnt marry my best friend, we werent friends at all, the person i married didnt like anything about me. We were married for 3 years, i remember one time asking... do you think were best friends or could ever be. This was the exact response i got, Seriously honey. Are you being serious, I dont even like you, How do you expect me to be friends with someone i dont even like. lol sooooo that pretty much was how it went for me

Hi seoulsearch!

Actualy my husband wasnt my best friend when we stared to go out. But yes he became my bestfriend during that period, and he still is.
He knows everything about me, he´s normaly the first one to know whats going through my mind.
That doesnt mean I dont have other good friends especialy girls, cause as a girls you sometimes need to speak and be understood where a man cant alsways understand. But still, I trust my husband more than anyone else, he is my other half, that makes us one.
Not saying its always easy just because we are best friends, life is difficult and can be ruff sometimes, but the thing is that if we are still together (5 years going out and another 8 years married) its because there is someone much greater and stronger that keeps us together. and that is GOD.
So when it comes to looking for the right person dont just ask yourself if he is your bestfriend but ask yourself if he is Godly, and if he will help you grow closer to Jesus everyday, not be an obstical, and also the other way around.

Im not saying also that just because he is your bestfrind he is the right one, there also has to be alot of attraction, most important things in life in common, and you have to have the same goals in life, you have to know what you both want in life and if you coincide.

well, I dont know if I have helped you in anyway or with any doubt you may have, this is just my experience,
we are all different and I´m sure you´ll have different advice. keep this prayer cause only God knows what is best for you.

Bless you

Sam--I'm not trying to sound rude or sarcastic at all, but... if you two didn't like each other at all, how did you wind up together??? Just curious... I mean, I've heard similar stories... just wondering what yours was.

Thats a good question actually, Ummm well we liked each other at first, but when i saw this persons real side, how they really were, couldnt stand um... i completely over looked it cause i thought i couldnt do any better. So we just went ahead and got married..... my parents begged me not to.... but i didnt it anyways.. always listen to your mom and dad people lol

Well... from reading your posts... it sounds like you've been through a LOT and I wanted to say I'm sorry. I really am.

*slight smile, trying to cheer him up*

Doesn't mean I'm going to lay off on the Chuck Norris jokes though. :)

When it comes to Chuckie, it is SO ON!! :)

(My bro was big into taekwondo... he was on his way to becoming a Grand Master but got married, had kids, etc... anyway, him and his best friend were obsessed with all martial arts. They would, back in the day of VCR's... watch those movies over and over and over... pause, replay, rewind, play... for hours... trying to study and copy the moves.)

Anyway!! Sorry everyone... feel free to go back to topic! I'm gone for a while, but please, carry on :)

I've never been married, but my parents have been for 25 years (almost 26) and together for 30. They always say that they're each others best friend, and that's what I want in my marriage. Someone posted about having an opposite sex best friend and I was thinking that I would be uncomfortable if my spouse had a best friend that wasn't me let alone a woman. I know some people say it can work, but I wouldn't be comfortable with it.

You're not alone there Sam. Pretty much the same thing happened to me. But when I saw things I didn't approve of and tried to break it off, she would turn on the water works and ol' good hearted Terry ALWAYS felt bad about making her cry. Didn't take too long for her to figure out how to use that to her advantage. My main weakness was I was always soft hearted and trusting. Hopefully I'm past that now.
