In light of the recent shootings in malls, movie theaters', and the recent tragedy in CN, I've been thinking a lot of about remarks people have said.It seems that almost always you hear not just families, but friends and neighbors say, "I never thought he/she was capable of doing that. They were always happy, well adjusted." Or other remarks like, "Well they've always been a loner, but they never seemed to be angry, or we never thought they could do something like this."

It's got me to wondering do we even have a clue as to what's really going on with people? Are we to self absorbed in our on personal lives, that we miss out on those little clues that might have stopped a tragedy in the making? Or are we, as a culture, truly naive as to what others are capable of doing? Are we simply only wanting to see the best in others?

What do you think?

Do we discern according to what we see with our eyes, or do we pray for discernment of the needs of people we meet, as God sends them to us? It's eyes vs. heart. How many of us have taken the time to look closely with our hearts, and how many more such young people never picked up a gun and shot up a school because we did? No one is counting those, because no one will ever know. Sometimes just a word or two at the right time can change a life.

My answer is no. Killers have existed since creation practically. Look at Cain. History is full of all sorts of psychopaths, mass murderers, serial killers and the like. I think there are a few things that just has made it worse, or in some case SEEM worse.
1 - Taking God out of schools, teaching people they are accidents with no purpose in life, thereby demoralizing not only the self, but also the way we view others around us.
2 - As the population increases so does the number of violent people, which gives the appearance of a growing problem, but percentage wise i believe its just growing with the population.
3 - A lack of teaching of basic morals, and an emphasis on self. Entitlement is rampant.
4 - Lack of availability for mental help, and good help, not just pill dispensers.
5 - The stress of just trying to keep up with whats 'average' can be difficult financially. It used to be a TV was a luxury item. Now, multiple tv's are standard, cable tv, along with cell phones, high speed internet, ipads, new computer every few years, and whatever other gadgets. Used to be familys just needed food, clothing, housing, maybe a car and the home necessities. Now look at all these other things we have to pay for, which puts more pressure on people to feel they need these things adding to the bills we have to pay.
6 - This leads to two income families, where the children are raised by strangers at a young age, not bonding with their parents. And often the stress of finances and other things lead to divorce, increasing problems within children, and the adults too, sometimes.
7 - An increase in violent entertainment, and a greater ease to obtain violent material.

But really when it comes down to it, these people have existed all through history, regardless of any of these previous points. Many of these people are sociopaths and will work very hard to maintain the facade of 'normal'. John Wayne Gacey was a childrens party clown. Ted Bundy deceived his wife, her family and all the family friends and lots of others into thinking he was a handsome, wealthy ladies man, when in reality he had no money of his own. Sociopaths learn at an early age, an age when people are reluctant to make assumptions about the severity of their condition, how to play the game and blend in. Honestly, i don't think there is much to be done to prevent these things other than making quality mental health care more readily available. And even then that will only do so much.

*a note, my list of 7 is meant to be taken as various small parts, coming together to form a larger picture. I am not saying any one of those things is, in and of itself 'the' problem. No one number is 'the' problem, i just believe these all contribute to the overall problem. So if you want to pick one out of the group just to argue, save it. I've explained myself already.

Out of Ugly's list of 7, I would say that number 7 is the main contributor. Let's face it, in today's society violence is mainstream; glorified on TV and popularized by many television shows and video games. People are desensitizing themselves to violence, it becomes normal to these people, there is no longer shock when seeing a gory movie scene. Yes, I know they are just actors with makeup, but over time this will take a toll on a persons psyche, and affect how they perceive it in real life.

Why do these people not know what is going on with the person? I think it all circles back to being desensitized. These people dumb down their emotional responses, and eventually lose contact with how they feel altogether. Why do they not reach out and tell somebody? Maybe because they think these feelings and thoughts are "normal" because they they see it portrayed on the TV shows they watch and the video games they play...

Dear_See-King_Truth,

I would respectfully disagree with your premise. I am almost three times your age and have a different perspective, based upon what I have witnessed over the years. I would submit that numbers '1' and '3' are the primary contributing factors to the morass which this county finds itself in. Here is my reasoning to support that argument.

When God was acknowledged in public schools, there was a basis for discerning between right and wrong. While the bible may not have been taught, except in religious schools of various denominations, there was a recognition that there was a higher power; that there was someone (Almighty God) who holds us accountable for our actions. And a child could not be exposed to God without running across the Ten Commandments somewhere along the way. Things like "Thou shalt not kill (commit murder)." and "Thous shalt not steal." would be committed to subconscious memory and would surface when that child was considering some unwholesome act.

The primary goal of the "Evolution" movement was, and is, to deny the existence of God. If there is no God, there is no ultimate judge of right and wrong, and people can pretty much do what they feel like. I don't remember whether it was the 60's or 70's when a saying came into vogue, "If it feels good, do it". This runs contrary to all the teaching of scripture. (Incidentally, it is a documented, proveable fact that many of the early proponents of the evolution theory were homosexuals.")

In any case, the absence of God led to the disappearance of moral teaching in our society's schools. "Do unto others..." was replaced by "Truth is relative to every person". This ushered in an age of "me firstism", where it didn't really matter what the consequences of your actions were, as long as you achieved satisfaction. Thus another new phrase was coined; "do unto others before they do unto you".

I believe that it is easy to follow this "thread" to its logical conclusion. Without the moral constraints of a higher power passing judgement on mankind, we have pretty much reached a place where anything goes. We would fail to recognize the psychopath among us because we acknowledge his "right" to do what he wants to do. When we finally realize just what he wants to do, it is too late.

God bless you all.

i think what is needed is legislative control. In Malaysia, we don't have such incident because NO ONE except law enforcement officers are allowed to be armed. If anyone caught with a gun without a license, its capital punishment-DEATH PENALTY. I believed many countries in asia like china, japan, korea, india etc..... also have similiar legislation.

I don't think that type of law would work here. A good portion of the people are opposed to the Death Penalty. And if politicians were to try that here, I'm not sure exactly what would happen.

Dear dmdave17,
Thank you for your very wise perspective. I would truly enjoy more of it.
