"Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;"
Ephesians 5:25

"Husbands love your wives as Christ loved the church." Period. No escape clause. No Loopholes. The tense is imperative. Love your wives. There are no conditional statements here. Just simply love your wives. Love them like Christ loves you. How messed up are you husbands? How many times should Christ have shunned you or excommunicated you? and yet He still showers you with love. Love them like Christ loves His bride, the Church. Lord knows we are a hideous bride. We rarely submit. We often fail. And He still loves us. Shut up and love your wives.

Amen, sadly very few "Christian" men (including pastors) get this today.

LORD does NOT know we are a hideous bride. HIS eye twinkle upon her tenderly, she is beautiful, without spot or blemish.

Eph 5:25-27
"Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her 26 to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, 27 and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless."

Sounds like we need some "washing" with the "engrafting of the Word" that God says is able to save our souls, so that we can be presented as holy without stain or blemish. You must have never read how God describes Israel's adultery/harlotry/idolatry in pretty graphic terms, but God never stops pursuing reconciliation and calling them to repent and says He is still her Husband (even after divorce).

Let me qualify that statement. In and of ourselves we are a hideous bride worthy of God's judgment and yet He pardons us and sanctifies us.

Can you ever be COMMANDED to love? Paul uses the word 'agape' here, and that means something like 'respect,' not amorous love. But still, if women are commanded to submit to their husbands (v.22), it's seems only fair we respect them in return. Apparently some husbands just need to be reminded of that sometimes. I for once don't need to be commanded to love (or respect) my girlfriend, I just do... :)

1 Cor 7:3
The husband should fulfill his marital duty to his wife, and likewise the wife to her husband.

It can be very hard to love a person who doesn't respect you. And it is as much up to the woman to make the union work. That being said, a man should show love UNTO his wife.

Patience. Kindness. Slow burning temper. Humility. Respect. But also determination and grit. The male responsibility in marriage is very much of the provider and protector.

I always look at God's relationship with us. We are all like prodigal sons, or wayward wives. And yet He shows us utter patience and love.

That's an unflinching kind of restraint. And it pays for a man to be restrained and gentle to his partner. That's a manly quality.

Maybe she is ever so horrid to him :) lol .the wife..
.so he does not feel the love as she only shows him badness and down him and abuses him and maybe hates on him every day.
Maybe she is bad wife to him and he can not be happy.

and wives love thy husband.

Sorry you taken advantage of and misstreated by your wife.
May she not succeed in harming you with maliciousness.
May you be blessed with Gods love .

Good to set boundaries.

Nice if husbands and wives love eachother.

Thank you so much for posting this thread. It's a breath of fresh air. There are numerous threads on a wife's duty to submit but very few on a husband's duty to love. With that being said, I would like to pose another question.

How did Christ love the church??? We know that he died for it, but what are other ways in which he expressed his love for the church???
