Hiya there Aggie

Welcome to C.C.

There is no scripture which will absolutely point out that smoking is wrong, and personally I think its is a matter of conscience.

However i think we are to treat or bodies as the Home of the Holy Spirit, God's precious presence living in us, and and keep it holy (set aside for God's purpose).

I used to smoke many years ago, I did pray for the Lord to take the need away, and after a year or so He did but i certainly would never condemn anyone who smoked.

Most Christians smoked before the 20th century... lol. They didn't know it was a health hazard and honestly most of them didn't live long enough to die from smoking in those days.

Myself, I was a pack a day smoker between the ages of 15 and 24 but quit after I started following Christ. I had the luxury of being delivered after a few Christians brothers prayed for me so just walked away and never had the urge to smoke again which is a miracle because I was heavily addicted to tobacco.

That was 26 years ago.

It is not a sin. The proper question is if it is expedient unto salvation. I Cor. 6:12

My son is home on strong pain pills waiting for the results of the biopsy on the large mass in his lungs and one in his liver. He has smoked since he was in college, and then drank excessively until recently. His body is the temple of God. He has harmed it, and the doctors thinks he has killed it.

Yes, I think smoking is a sin.

Being sinful? What about the multiple health problems that come with smoking? Why do Christians need a scripture to prove something is bad, when it's apparent that it's bad for you?

Romans 14:23 But whoever has doubts is condemned if they eat, because their eating is not from faith; and everything that does not come from faith is sin.
I quit when i was 23.

Here are some scriptures that may be helpful. 1 Cor 6:19-20, 1 Cor 10:31, and Rom 12:1-2 :)

Paul said that everything was permissible, but everything is not beneficial. I think any substance that is addictive ultimately pulls you from God.

Titus 2:12 Training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age,

Ephesians 5:18 And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit,

Smoking is an addiction and it's always over done. It's at least a pack a day. We are also to practice self control.

[h=3]1 Corinthians 6:19-20[/h]New International Version (NIV)

[SUP]19 [/SUP]Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; [SUP]20 [/SUP]you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.

Well... What was a missionary to the Indians gonna tell them when he couldn't take a whiff of the peace pipe? Smoking is unhealthy, but not morally wrong aside from making it a potential hazard to your health and testimony. If you can't break your addiction why should the recovering alcoholic or the newly converted meth addict? (rhetorical question)

Morally wrong? Yes. We are not to kill, smoking kills the body. Slowly, cell by cell, but it kills. Our bodies are the temple of God, it is harming the temple.

Are you struggling with smoking or has someone told you that you are not a Christian because you smoke? or you know someone who proclaims they are a Christian but they smoke?

What is sin?
Pr. 10.19 In the multitude of words there wants not sin: but he that refrains his lips is wise.
Pr. 14.21 He that despises his neighbour sins: but he that has mercy on the poor, happy is he.
Pr.24.9 The thought of foolishness is sin: and the scorner is an abomination to men.

Ro. 14.23 And he that doubts is damned if he eat, because he eat not of faith: for whatsoever is not of faith is sin.

Ja. 4.17 Therefore to him that knows to do good, and does it not, to him it is sin.
1 Jn. 3.4 Whosoever commits sin transgresses also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law.
1 Jn 5.17 All unrighteousness is sin: and there is a sin not unto death.
Sin against Holy Spirit ~ Is. 63.10; Mt. 12.31; Mk 3.29; Ac. 5.3; Ep. 4.30; 1Th. 5.19; He. 10.29; 1Jn. 5.16

And God said, Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit after his kind, whose seed is in itself, upon the earth: and it was so.
And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat.

Now why is cigarette smoking a sin? because our bodies are the temple of God! so why then do we fill it full of fats, salt, chemically altered food, foods with pesticides, man made medicines, recreational drugs, we are gluttons, eat modified meats, drink modified liquids, modified fruits and what was the question again?

**************Merriam Webster dictionary
[h=2]Definition of DEBAUCHERY[/h]1
a : extreme indulgence in sensuality
b plural : orgies

2
archaic : seduction from virtue or duty

Alcohol is not on par with cigarette smoking as over indulgence in alcohol causes one to lose control of their thoughts and body thereby allowing evil to take control.

I see more against judging others and making up one's law to not smoking then there is in the Bible.

1. If it is for yourself and you are having problems quitting if that is what you want ask God, ask others to pray for you.
2. If it is because you hear others condemning it but would like to know for sure God gave us the New Testament because mankind was to hard on their fellow man and forgot about love and no cigarette smoking will not condemn you to hell. If it is a sin then it would be one of those sins not unto death by God's judgment.
3. If you are asking because the church you are seeking to attend is taking a hard line to it then maybe you should find one that is not so condemning.
For God SO LOVED the WORLD HE GAVE His ONLY begotten son... He didn't say a select few and He didn't tell us to judge one another outside of the realm of His Word given to us.
The Bible tells us that if we see a wrong and correct the man and he does not accept the correction then you have done what is required of you and are free from condemnation because you have tried but we are not to be bullies that turn others further away from God.

When I have a question about God or what mankind preaches I ask GOD. It is He we serve so when in doubt it is He whom we should seek.

Mamma, seriously, you need to refer to Native Americans, as Native Americans or their actual tribal name. Because there was many Christian Missionaries that went to India. There are a few Indian Christians here too.

Cigarettes are very different to loose leaf tobacco or cigars. Cigarettes contain all sorts of rubbish in them.

Smoking is playing Russian roulette with your body. "Thou shalt not kill."
