Whats up people? I just moved closer to my family and now I have the great opportunitty of sharing God with my niece and nephew who are 5 and 3. They are always excited to go to church with me and I just bought them their first bible. Its a great kids bible full of illustrations. I started to read it to them today and to my surprise they are taking to it very well. They are very interested and talk about stuff like obeying God and being good well after we finish reading. The thing is, I dont have a lot of experience in teaching kids so I was wondering if there are any seasoned vets out there with some helpful tips. You know, just things I could do to help them learn the love of our Lord. .....I'd appreciate it, thanks!

The ol' adage of *do as I say, not as I do*...does NOT apply here. lol Kids learn best at that age from what they see. You can say one thing, BUT, they seem to remember what they see more than what they here. (although both are important. Just lead them by example. Let them soak up most of what they are learning from what they experience just being with you. If I may ask, are they being raised in a Christian home..? Are there others to reinforce what you maybe be teaching them..?
I am sure they are loving the time with you as you read to them etc. :)

Just to support what Grace says. You are doing a fine job Derek, but at that age it is what these two children see rather than hear.

Be consistant in how you behave and do continue to read to them and share the gospel in language they can understand.

How do your brother/sister and their spouse view the Christian Faith? Do they live by it or is it just "something you do" in their view. Spending much more time with them they will have far more influence than you can, . Just continue to love them and be yourself as the Lord has molded you.

Dereck, I have worked with Children for many years, as a Sunday school teacher and also in the public school system for awhile. Child do learn from what they see, you are off to a great start with them .. But a few things that might help to also bring things home to them and help them remeber what you are telling them and teaching them is by making a game of it. After you tell them a bible story or read the bible to them play a memory game with them of some sort.. give them points for their answers.. Kids love it. Make the learning fun.. Keep their attention. You can get some great bible games at the Bible book store. there are little card games, with questions and answers called Bible who am I and Bible what am I. These all give you the Book chapter and verses where the answers can be found.... Also having some pics of the story you are telling them about helps as well.. Even if you have to draw them yourself or get them to help.. Just make it fun.. They will never forget it.. This works for all ages of kids.

sorry just remembered this .. lol.. Kids that age LOVE to sing and dance.. Maybe you could find a cd or Dvd with some bible action songs on it and learn them and sing them with them .. Would be fun for you and them as well, and they learn the bible through song and if you get a good song in their head they are going to be singing it at home as well so Mom and Dad and it will be away of them sending a message to their parents and anyone else who loves to hear them sing. .

Well I have four kids..and honestly, each one is so individual..you have to know their personality and see how they are going to relate to whatever it is you want to teach them. My 9 year old learns through music....my 5 year old through humor...my 11 year old through just talking...my 2 year old through...well he doesnt learn much yet. jk...haha.

Take it to their level..kids just want your time. If you give kids your time you are already 70 percent ahead of alot of other adults.

Thanks guys for your advice. A little update: they are doing very good, they both are eager to go to church with me even if no one else does. The oldest (5) is learning a lot just out of the bible he has and is picking up on stuff I never thought he would. His favorite story is of Jonah and the fish, he was reading it on the way home Sunday and knew the word "nineveh". I was amazed. God is wonderful isnt He?
