So what do you think of this taking the law into your own hands? Is this something we cannot understand because of the culture? I had a few friends from India when I lived in an area with many East Indians. One was being badly abused by her husband, but I could not convince her to phone the police. The older women advised her to encourage her husband to drink himself into a stupor, but he actually became more abusive the drunker he got.

But I know this problem is not limited to India? What should be done to men who abuse their wives, including Christian husbands?

The Gulabi Gang.
The Gulabi gang was founded in 2006 by Sampat Pal Devi, a mother of five, as a response to widespread domestic abuse and other violence against women.
Gulabis visit abusive husbands and beat them up with laathis (bamboo sticks) unless they stop abusing their wives.
The Gulabi gang is a group of Indian women vigilantes and activists originally from Bundelkhand, Uttar Pradesh, but reported to be active across North India as of 2010

Yes Angela, culturally, India is more repressive to its women than its western counterparts.
It is also very diverse, far more than even Europe.

It's interesting that you brought up the Gulabi Gang, because there are many such women centric groups in India, with strong ties and grassroots in rural areas. The Chipkoo Movement which was started by a woman and the Grameen Bank beneficiaries are mostly women.

Still, the divorce rates are very low in India .

In India, marriages are sacred. A marriage is once in a lifetime. We respect the bond of marriage and the position of a married woman.
Divorce and separation has an extreme stigma attached to it.

Domestic Abuse Laws in India are very weak. They're mostly categorized as dowry and harrassment laws, and there have been numerous cases where some wives have deviously filed cases against their husbands and family on this.

I don't suggest though , that anyone takes the law in their own hands. However in the rural areas, where there is hardly any governance, if more women formed support groups to protect themselves... maybe that would be a good thing.

I am mostly commenting on the Indian culture aspect. What should be done to husbands who abuse their wives? Well, is a good beating the answer? Well, I look to the Word.

Proverbs 27:22

No matter how hard
you beat a fool,
you can’t pound out
the foolishness

Beating up is not the solution, but cannot complain because they don't know Jesus and nobody has gone there to proclaim it to them i guess...

Tape badgers to their butt cheeks. Every time they sit down they get clawed and bitten. And the more tired they are the feistier the badgers become. Also make it a court order to wear giant foam pillows on their hands and feet.

Yahweh is a lover of Justice. The God of the heavens and the earth is against all perpetrators of such violence and abuse. The Bible is consistent in demonstrating honor and respect for women.!! The Hebrew and Greek scriptures both testify to that elevated and precious view of women.!

God hates all forms of exploitation and abuse. (Exodus 22:22; Deuteronomy 27:19; Isaiah 10:1, 2) The Mosaic Law condemned rape and prostitution. (Leviticus 19:29; Deuteronomy 22:23-29) Adultery was prohibited, and the penalty was death for both parties. (Leviticus 20:10) Rather than discriminate against women, the Law elevated and protected them from the rampant exploitation common in the surrounding nations. A capable Jewish wife was a highly respected and esteemed individual. (Proverbs 31:10, 28-30) The Israelites’ failure to follow God’s laws on showing respect for women was their fault, not God’s will. (Deuteronomy 32:5) Ultimately, God judged and punished the nation as a whole for their flagrant disobedience.

Jesus too consistently treated women with respect. He refused to follow the discriminatory traditions and regulations taught by the Pharisees. He talked to non-Jewish women. (Matthew 15:22-28; John 4:7-9) He taught women. (Luke 10:38-42) He protected women from being abandoned. (Mark 10:11, 12) Perhaps the most revolutionary step for his time was that Jesus accepted women into his inner circle of friends. (Luke 8:1-3) As the perfect embodiment of all of God’s qualities, Jesus showed that individuals of both sexes have equal value in God’s eyes. In fact, among the early Christians, both men and women received the gift of the holy spirit.

Unfortunately the only people who are guided by and strictly adhere to the teachings and the laws of the Christ and the principles found in the Bible are genuine Christians. So with regard to the abuse experienced by women in India and elsewhere just as the Apostle Paul appealed to Caesar they too must continue to avail themselves of the protection provided by the laws of the land the help rendered by the global community that enforce human rights and demand dignified treatment for all humans.

It seems that since the world began, the only solution is the true God. The Hittites and Philistines even killed their babies like our people without God are doing now. All the bozos that have told the world they were prophets with special inside view of God like the guy who made up Allah, and the Mormons who add a bunch of scripture use the very words of the true God, but there are terrible women abuses done in their "god's" name. We have had to jail some of the Mormons.

It seems that following the rules without love or the true God involved leads to self righteous or wicked people even in the Christian church. Still, from what we learn from history, it is loving the one true God and hearing His voice that is the only real cure.
