I notice a trend of Americans going to countries in far of places for short period of times spending a lot of money to get there and after a week of giving time they spend a week seeing the sights

They call those vacations. Are you suggesting they go under the guise of missionary trips?

I commonly interact with people from many different churches and I see it as a common thread most are upper middle class married women

I guess a short term mission trip is better than none. Although in the old days, I think a year was short term. My husband and I were looking at a year teaching ESL in Cambodia, but I cannot do it because of my health issues. That is my dream.

Not sure why you think it is just women who engage in this practice!

I think it would be great for women to go on missions, but going half way around the world while you are married without your children or husband while people are in need close to home.

I think my mother is a model missionary but has never left the country
she has volunteered at Indian reservations, local good banks. As a child my parents opened our home to a Vietnamese family escaping communism.

she is disappointed a group of local married women are going to Uganda leaving their husbands and kids for 15 days.
she said they should go when there kids are grown

I've heard it called 'vacation with a purpose.'

As long as it's their own money, so what? It's their choice. Using their money to go on vacation and using some of their vacation time as a witness.
Though i'm not so sure about groups of women taking off on Missions leaving their family behind. That is the kind of behavior that is supposed to be restricted when married, unless done together. Which is why Paul was not a fan of marriage. You either have no limit your availability to God or not be there for your family as you should. But, in America, we have to have it all, why let our commitments to others limit us to doing what WE want? =P
