Religious fanatic, that's what they say
True, I may be on the brink
I hear them yell at us, "Shut up and play"
Well, who asked what you think?

No time for mediocracy
Convenience, or practicality
He went all about for us, say what you will
I'll answer to my God

I'm a freak, they say I've lost my mind
But I know I've never seen so clearly
When I speak, they say I've gone too far this time
And lets me know, I have not gone nearly

Bible thumpin' reactionist
And I'm proud to bear the name
Take our music, take away our lives
Jesus still remains

I wonder what will people think
When why hear that I'm a Jesus freak
He went all about for us, say what you will
I'll answer to my God

I'm a freak, they say I've lost my mind
But I know I've never seen so clearly
When I speak, they say I've gone too far this time
And lets me know, I have not gone nearly

I'm a freak, they say I've lost my mind
But I know I've never seen so clearly
When I speak, they say I've gone too far this time
And lets me know, I have not gone nearly

You're too young to have been at those third wave Ska concerts of the early 1980s. But I was there helping bounce them... lol.

That was a fun time. But it passed and was replaced with a LOT of different types of Alternative music. Some of it was interesting, like I remember talking to Andrew Schwab (one of the most genuine and coolest people I've ever met btw) when he was playing Christian colleges as a rapcore artist before his band's sound changed and they got signed, for example. Base types of music present in the 80's branched out into about a hundred directions in the 90's.

But thanks for the memory :).

I never realized ska was around in the 80's. Interesting. I have always been a fan of ska music. In the early and mid 90's were my teenage years and I can remember listening to the supertones back then. I stepped into the world for a few years and got away from Christian music, eventually getting saved when I was 23 and going back to the same Christian bands I had once listened too. It's quite funny, I am 35 now and I still listen to the supertones on a regular basis lol. They never get old. It's not just the style and the groove of music that I like but also the lyrics. Lyrics play a huge part in what kind of music I listen to. The supertones have always had genuine and real lyrics that speak to me. They kept it real. Thanks for liking the song. :)

Yes, Ska exploded back onto the music scene beginning in the early 1980s in what has come to be called the 'Third Wave Ska' movement. SoCal was one of the geographical locations it manifested and it was very popular here during that time.

It spawned groups like No Doubt in the late 1980s. I remember Gwen doing backyard ska parties with Gwen dressed in 1950s housewife dresses... lol. Her brother actually started the band and was a very good keyboardist and songwriter but for some reason dropped out early on. I don't remember why... maybe a health related issue or something.

The OC Supertones formed even later than that and because of their late entry into the third wave ska revival, combined with their Christian evangelism, were initially considered a gimmick band by most of the ska fans here. BUT, they stayed the course and consistently wrote and performed and over time definitely earned their respect. :)
