I have been wondering this for a while now. I love all kinds of metal, besides death metal, and have recently found a really good band named Evergrey. I love the sound of their music and their style of playing, but I wonder about the lyrics. I hear that the lyrical content of Evergrey is dark. I haven't found anything bad in their lyrics but they seem to discuss things like suicide, death, tragedy, solitude, won't be left alone, betrayal, etc. etc. They don't seem to place these in front of the listener as a way to follow them, but it might seem that they sing about these topics for the listener to avoid. Is this true that they have dark lyrical content? And if so, is it still okay to listen to this band as a Christian? I just really love the sound of them.

Thanks everybody for your answers,
Christian

Guess what else discusses things like suicide, death, tragedy, solitude, and betrayal? The bible. There's nothing wrong with Evergrey brother, it's simply music. In the end, we are solely responsible for our actions, not the things around us. I pray Evergrey just brings you closer to God.

Doesn't metal generally cover such topics anyways? Not sure why this one band would be wrong in light of the rest of them.
And music is subjective. If your conscience is bothered by something, don't listen to it. Like, for me, there are a few Halestorm songs i enjoy, but something about listening to them often makes me depressed, so i only listen to them once in a while. And not too much when i do. Being a death metal fan there's also a lot of secular bands i would love to listen to, but because of the lyrics and imagery i can't listen to them. But i have known others who listened to these same bands without flinching.
In the end it's between you and God. The difficult part of that is being willing to hear Gods conscience on you and obey. It can be easy to dismiss for the sake of a good sounding band. I've learned this over years of listening to metal. Many times i find if i have to question something in a way i don't question other things, there's a reason for it.
