One thing I know....plants will thrive when grown next to speakers playing classical like Bach and will turn brown and die when grown next to speakers playing heavy metal.....

Before I get slammed I play guitar.....love jamming and used to play song from groups like Dokken, Scorpions, Metallica etc.....now when I pick it up I just jam my own stuff....having said that....the massage of many songs is for sure contrary to scripture and does not glorify God.........there are some songs that I will not listen to, and some that I do because I like the guitar.....

The music is probably intended to hypnotize the listener into a peaceful trance like state to keep them coming back for that feeling.

Don't forget this one also. At least for me... whenever I hear it it's like it's being sung to God. When I first discovered this, you have no idea how many times I would get in my car and at the exact time I turned the radio on this song would begin. I was just stunned. It was like on repeat mode every time I drove somewhere. I believed back then it was a message to me to stay focused on Him.

When I came back from my backsliding in a dramatic way in 2011 I heard this song, and it's forever in my memory from that year. It really sounds like God is singing you a lullaby.

Beautiful song. I love his soulful voice. Interesting too that the album is called "till the sun turns black"

"Don't let your heart get heavy... child inside you there's a strength that lies.....

I am not a music expert, but I think some of the styles of music done today can really be a problem. Especially in this day and age, when we have drugs and alcohol mixed in, this can be a problem.

Interesting enough, in the area of death metal, there has been murders related.

It's interesting there are still people talking about the evils of rock music when rock music isn't that popular anymore.

Also been murders within the confines of congregations. Even back in Pauls day there was one church was allowing incest to happen. Saw a video about a pastors wife that hired a hitman to kill her husband.
To think people can isolate incidents of a certain spectrum of people as evidence of anything is dishonest. In all cultures, subcultures, belief systems there are those that commit murder.

Besides, secular black metal has had more violence and murder revolve around it than death metal.

The problem isn't what kind of music someone listens to, or games they play, or church they attend, or any of those things. It's the individual that makes the choice that has a problem when they choose to do evil.

Depends on how you're defining 'rock music'. If you're referring to old style rock n roll, it's not very mainstream, but still some out there. Though the closest is rockabilly, which has a large underground following. But modern versions of rock are still very much alive and popular. And, typically, threads like this have an all encompassing accusation of all spin offs of rock. This is a myriad of subgenres. But even then it's not always about the music. When popular gospel singer Pat Boone did lounge style covers of well known metal songs many criticized him, despite not playing actual rock songs. Some people just love to throw condemnation around as widely as possible. As evidenced by this thread.

In relation to metal music, someone with more knowledge in this area will have to explain it better than me, but what is the difference between black metal and death metal. There is that much to metal genre, it so confusing.

Everyone has their own styles what they enjoy of music. Some like this style, some like that style. Personal choice

But nowadays, music in general, I still think the pop music genre represents a bigger danger. But that is my opinion.

However I have notice there is more sexualization in the music industry nowadays.

peaceful trance-like state? sounds like you're talking about classical music..

also sounds like you're talking about today's "praise and worship"

. . . or did you mean rock and roll?

black metal is usually characterized by vocals that are higher pitched, sometimes described as 'shrieking' and 'blast-beat' drumlines, as opposed to 'death metal' vocals that are lower pitched and sometimes described as 'growling' i.e. more gutteral, with drumlines that have fewer beats per measure.
black metal guitar lines typically have more treble than bass, and the reverse for death metal, which often more heavily features rhythm.

of course there is wide variation across both styles, and crossover, and many groups/artists who could be categorized either way actually feature 'clean' vocals and differing drumbeat characterization.

i'm not very well versed in separating out sub-genres, and even people who are have varying opinions on what puts a particular song in one category or another. to me it's almost an exercise in futility - any single band or album, and even single songs, can vary so much that it becomes pointless to try to pigeonhole everything with what amounts to largely subjective descriptions like this. but i thought i'd take a stab at answering your question anyway

One thing with some of the music today, and this is in some of these metal bands, the one thing that just doesn't mix in my opinion is when you have a female singer with a nice pleasant voice, and at the same time, you got some guy all of a sudden throw in that growl type voice. Never could understand that.

Oh well to each their own.

Aside from just posting in the "New Christian Chat Members (Introduce yourselves!!!)" forum, this is my first post here.

Even though it pertains specifically to the church, I've found this passage from N. T. Wright's excellent book "Scripture and the Authority of God" to be very helpful for me regarding music, and just about anything else:

"We could put it like this. 'Experience' is what grows by itself in the garden. 'Authority' is what happens when the gardener wants to affirm the goodness of the genuine flowers and vegetables by uprooting the weeds in order to let beauty and fruitfulness triumph over chaos, thorns, and thistles. An over-authoritarian church, paying no attention to experience, solves the problem by paving the garden with concrete. An over-experiential church solves the (real or imagined) problem of concrete (rigid and "judgmental" forms of faith) by letting anything and everything grow unchecked, sometimes labeling concrete as "law" and so celebrating any and every weed as 'grace.'"

Replace the word "church" with "person;" it's an imperfect analogy, but I think it's still a good one.

Are songs like Stevie Wonder's "As," Foreigner's "I Want to Know What Love Is," and Spiral Starecase's "More Today Than Yesterday" genuine flowers and vegetables - or weeds? I believe it's up to each of us as individuals to look to God, look to the Bible, and look within ourselves to find the answers.

I do like the idea of weeding instead of paving everything over or letting everything take root.

speaking of that, i heard someone point something recently about the parable of the wheat and the tares ((Matthew 13:24-30)):

Jesus explains this parable to the disciples ((Matthew 13:37-43)). in this parable, the servants notice that tares have been sown among the wheat, and they ask the owner of the field whether they should go through and uproot them? He says no, you may uproot the good while you are trying to weed out the bad. instead, let the reapers separate them at the time of harvest. later, in the explanation, Jesus identifies Himself as the one who sows the good seed, which is interesting in itself, because some people like to think of themselves as the ones who sow the seed - but the interesting thing pointed out to me was this: Jesus identifies the reapers, who do the actual separating, as His angels. not us.

it is the angels who shall separate the tares from the wheat, not the workers in the field. a conclusion that can easily be drawn from this is that we're too stupid & clumsy to be trusted to go through the field trying to separate tares from wheat, especially before harvest time; that task is not ours but belongs to His angels.

something to think about, i think, when anyone decides in their mind that they are wise enough & capable to make decisions about whether some musical genre is holy or evil. this parable would seem to indicate that no, we're not qualified.
