Psalm 8, East meets West

"O LORD our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth!"

This Psalm was translated into Turkish by Wojciech Bobowski, also known as Ali Ufki. He was a converted Polish nobleman in the service of the Ottomans. It's fascinating to hear how the melody of the Genevan Psalter works really well with traditional Ottoman music. Sung in Turkish and the original French of the Psalter.

Oops, i now see i wasn't supposed to post a video as a reply, sorry. I love the old melodies of the Genevan Psalter, especially in settings as these (Psalm 6). The Psalter played a big role in the spiritual life of the Netherlands, from their struggle against the Spanisch until the present day. They are still an integral part of traditinal Dutch dervices. It's interesting to see how a lot of those melodies were derived from popular wordly songs of that time. Much like in our time the Psalms are made accessible by the use of pop music, through Praise music.
