Linkin Park is absolutely my favorite band. Mike Shinoda of LP is my biggest musical influence. Of course they aren't the only band/musicians I listen to, but I listen quite often. I've had people on me about listening to secular music. What is your opinion of Linkin Park and just secular music altogether.

Examples:

Linkin Park- No Roads Left Lyrics HD - YouTube

Linkin Park - LOST IN THE ECHO (Lyric Video) - YouTube

Linkin Park - Breaking The Habit lyrics - YouTube

I could get carried away here. So I'll stop at those three.

I think they're lame. My opinion.

Please note that the name of this forum is CHRISTIAN Music Forum. An occasional secular post may be acceptable, but i think they would rather not have entire threads devoted to secular music/bands.

I avoid a lot of secular music. I used to listen to it more, but over time, i realized the negative impact it had on me. Mostly it dragged me down, made me feel depressed. So i'll listen to certain things in small doses, but i have to watch how much. And i avoid completely a lot of things i would enjoy because the lyrics to the things i would like are so bad, i'd feel guilt listening, before i would even feel pulled down.
But i think music is a personal choice and no one has the right to tell anyone else what to listen to. That is between you and God, hopefully, people are actually willing to hear, listen and obey God and not make excuses if He sends a person in a direction they don't like.

I liked them back in high school. While they have no swearing, the themes are quite negative and depressing. I enjoy some secular music and find no problem with them.

I used to loved Linkin Park...then I woke up one morning, saw a poster I had, said to myself "Linkin Park" sucks, tore it off my wall and quit listening to them (I literally still loved them the day before it was weird). I tried listening again a few months later, and it really did grate on my nerves.

To me lyrics are a really big part of it. I listen to a lot of metal and for non-christian bands in that genre religion is very prevalent thing it seems like. Some are border line christian, some are just weird hippie tree huggers, others are extremely anti-christian. I figure if there are lyrics that I can't sing along to because of beliefs, then I probably shouldn't be listening to it.

My favorite Christian rock band is RED.

PS: I figured this post relates to christian music so I didn't see a problem with it.

I don't mind Linkin Park. I never listened to them back in the day when they were really popular so I'm not really sick of em like a lot of people are. Not my favorite by any means but they aren't bad. Even some say their music is kind of negative and yeah, there's a negative outlook in their songs for sure but... I think it's pretty honest to what a lot of people feel. And I think empty feelings like that get you to search and look deeper. So anything that provokes that IMO isn't all bad.

And I have no problem with secular music in general to be honest. Each song is different and should be judged accordingly. If bands have a strong negative or anti Christian vibe, then I tend to avoid all their music all together, even the ones that don't have anything wrong with them.

Linkin Park is pretty cool, I like a lot of their songs. They aren't my favorite band in the world, but not bad. It's funny though, my sister is an absolutely huge LP fan, been to a boat load of their concerts and has all their CD's and posters and all sorts of stuff. She tried to get me to go to one of their concerts, but while I like them, I don't want to shell out 40-80 bucks on their concert. Next time she asks, I'll say, if you buy the ticket for me I'll go. lol

You made a post talking exclusively about a secular band, and linking their songs. Guess i don't see how that relates to Christian music.

I don't see why you should even point that out.

Is the "christian music forum" only for talking and promoting christian music? Or is it also open for people (especially new christians) to ask what the opinion of the christian community is on secular music? (wether specific or in general)

I think it should be open for people to ask questions that they have without someone telling them "this is not the place for that"

I understand people should not promote nonchristian things here, but simply asking a question and giving some examples (for people who may not be familiar with the subject) is not promotion.

I used to listen to LP a heap when i was at school, not so much any more even though i seem them play live last month.

I'd say I listen to a 50/50 split of Christian and Secular bands. Most of the secular bands i do listen to have positive and uplifting lyrics/messages in thier songs which isn't a bad thing. :)

Umm.. you did notice the title, and talking about LP.. oh, and the 3 posts to their videos? Did i say anything to her at all about asking peoples opinions on secular music? Nope, i sure didn't. In fact, i answered her question. So maybe think before you speak.

Yea, so what? The title was a statement and how are you supposed to discuss something without talking about it? And the videos were examples.

And yea, but as far as I can see you also said unnecessary nitpicky things and it makes you seem a bit ridiculous. But hey, if that's how you wanna be, then whatever.

ummm...I think he was referring to the fact that the forum title is christian music forum, and Linkin Park is not christian...I do believe he also mentioned that he had no issue with the fact she was asking opinions, only that she posted videos...calm down sparky.

1. linkin park is not antichristian... 2. the forums are not being flooded with secular music... so I don't get why its an issue.

And I'm not sparky, sparky is richie's pikachu xD

no one said they were antichristian...last I knew their bass player was a christian, and even played in a christian band called Tasty Snax, as a whole they're not a christian band though.

Yes I know no one said that. Just sayin there is no good reason to have an issue with a few secular music posts when the purpose is appropriate discussion :)

Actually, I asked about people's opinions on listening to them even though they are not christian... so it is entirely related to christian music.

I'm a new Christian for a few years, and I still listen " secular " music, but " secular " music without swearing. I play piano and I plan to record my own music as soon as possible.

Some of my favorite music are Ryan Farish, Moya Brennan, Enya, Rondo Veneziano, Celtic music, Sting, Dire Straits, Whitney Houston, Alicia Keys, Norah Jones, Sophie B. Hawkins, Madonna, Britney Spears, Cindy Lauper, native Indian music, Zhang Xiao Yin ( Harp ), Chen Hue ( Flute ), Jean Michel Jarre, Vangelis, Serra, etc. and even a few songs of Fergie, Ludacris, Tupac, and 50 cent and the Game, etc.

In fact I love almost all kinds of music but I hate noise and swearing ! So I have a problem listening to many of Pac songs for example ! Pac had really a great talent but I hate to death the fact he swears extremely awful words in many of his songs ! Get rid of the swearing, clean the lyrics, keep the wonderful melody and rhythm and really it would be fantastic !

I would love to do that job !

Cleaning some wonderful secular music to make it perfectly appropriate to all christian ears and minds !

I don't know a lot about LP, I remember I used to like a lot some of their first singles, but then it looked like they began to do heavy metal, and I hate heavy metal, it's all noise to me. The only metal music I like a lot right now is Evanescence !

Hello there. Let me see if I can give some helpful input for you..

My FORMER favorite music groups included nine inch nails and metallica.. then came the 90s and the bands of year '93 really did it for me.. I personally feel, compared with LP..they were all BY FAR superior! ;) -- that is my opinion on LP.

As for secular music altogether, I still listen to the radio and my ipod still has dance songs (for running) some blues, indie groups, oh and Kimbra too and all that.. BUT YOU HAVE TO KEEP IN MIND THAT TOO MUCH - of secular music in whatever genre is generally NOT BENEFICIAL. maybe a good question to ask is WHY he is your biggest music influence? What makes you love them? Do their words affect you positively? Does it bring you closer to God? And if that's hard to do, here's a simple trick (zaoman mentioned this already) but it really is helpful -- if you sing along with the lyrics and realize the words don't mirror your (godly) beliefs then don't listen to them anymore. :) I think you are brave for posting that question here BUT I hope you are as brave in doing the right thing :)
