There's even more to "Modern Vampires of the City". Nearly every song has a religious/biblical theme. The narrative makes the most sense if you see it as two sides of an LP: songs 1-6 and songs 7-12. References: God and Man on 'Modern Vampires of the City' | PopMatters; A Glossary for the New Vampire Weekend Album -- Vulture; Elie Lichtschein: God, Death and Modern Vampires; New Vampire Weekend Album Is a Guide for the Perplexed – Tablet Magazine (good article!) And I also often search songmeanings.com, some commentaries sometimes have sharp ideas there, especially on these songs.

I also like "Far" by Regina Spektor. "Laughing With" is a masterpiece. Hint to the last line of the song. It's about, when someone's joking and lying "no, I was not laughing at you, I was joking *with* you." Also the album is very religious. And the song's title does the same as "Ya Hey" by VW does. Not writing "G-d". Lyrics video (English and Spanish)

And of course "Seven Swans" by Sufjan Stevens, and also "Illinois(e)" has quite a lot biblical references, end times ("Sears Tower") etc. Sadly his latest album "Age of Adz", themes, symbolism, etc. sounds weird and like he had suffered a lot. It's not a bad idea to pray for him.

And also mentioned previously here: "Welcome to the Welcome Wagon" by The Welcome Wagon. It is really great. And the singer is or used to be Sufjan Stevens pastor. The also have a newer album: "Precious Remedies Against Satan's Devices".

PS: As always be a bit careful with any music. I also have my (huge) problems with most CCM. (Because some fellow Christians I know tend to turn off their discernment/judgement when it comes to CCM, where CCM=generally good. Careful now! It's certainly not, I even think it is easier to get corrupted because listeners are not *that* careful as with "wordly" music. Just my opinion. But with the albums mentioned above I feel there's not much wrong with them.

PPS: Sorry for my English. ;-)

so post some of his shoegazey songs! this band is a lot more than shoegaze, but it is where his music started. like this, where the MBV / blur / swans etc influence is unmistakable:

I'm a big Vampire Weekend fan, but I have not really listened to their newest album. This song is awesome. Thank you for posting.

To my surprise, it isn't very off-base. Would you say that about the rest of the album?

He was a diplomat's son...
You haven't heard the whole album?!
Brother, I implore you to now!!
Haha, it's their best work to date, key tracks are:
>hannah hunt
>step
>obvious bicycle
>ya hey
>diane young

Man, it's just so good, you won't regret it. Also, what do you mean by off based?

If you like your freak folk experimental, chaotic, and beautiful, check out the Trees Community. A very talented group of young adults in the seventies who banded together for the search of truth that eventually led them to the Christian faith.

that Trees Community is groovy!
thanks!

here's another "community of trees" -- Men as Trees Walking -- that's ironically not too much different :)

Seal Upon My Heart

You make my heart rejoice when I hear Your still small voice
whisper teaching and promises
everlasting covenants
A seal upon my heart

I raise high the Cup of Salvation and call upon the Holy Name of ADONAI
My ADONAI

I vow to You in Your assembly in the courts of Your House
Your very Heart: Jerusalem
Jerusalem

You make my heart rejoice when I hear Your still small voice
whisper teaching and promises
everlasting covenants
A seal upon my heart

Bumping the thread with Soul-Junk. An avant-garde pop musician originally belonging to Truman's Water, Glenn Galloway released a string of albums overflowing with his love for the Lord. This is part of his hip-hop style, will post avant-garde pop in a moment.

Enjoy this beautiful song from east coast rapper Shai Linne. With a field recording sermon on the intro, fiery lyrics and a clean old school beat, hip hop fans will love what Shai has to say, even if it's not entirely always agree with.

Born alongside the recent modern folk pop movement, Damion Suomi and the minor prophets will appeal to fans of Mumford and Sons and Rend Collective

>do you like Belgian lo-fi?*

I do now haha. I'm a sucker for lo-fi! My friends have released some nice cassettes in the past that haven't had a digital release in the years since the analog recordings, I'll have to share them when they finally do. Dude, I'm loving this song, I'll try and post what I have in regards.

Helplessness Blues by Fleet Foxes will always have a special place in my heart despite being a spiritual secular band. However, I don't think the message departs far from man's desire to belong to something greater than himself.

i feel the same way about some Dead Can Dance; songs like this one, a yearning for a saviors arms:

the female singer from this band has given public testimony accepting Christ, and even of being filled with the Holy Spirit and healed of hepatitis, but Dead Can Dance as a band was always an eclectic mix of new-age mysticism, baroque and medieval psaltry, celtic folk and world-beat universalism. still, it had the small fruit of at least one of God's children in there.

it's hard to call dead can dance "secular" because it's such overtly "spiritual" music, but it's not the gospel of Christ they're singing about in particular, or when it is, it's only one part of a melange.
