Gungor Controversy Continues as Singer States Jesus Could Have Been Wrong About Adam, Noah

September 2, 2014 By: Heather Clark

Controversy continues to stir over statements made by a professing Christian singer/songwriter who denies Genesis as being literal after the musician recently asserted on an online podcast that Jesus could have been wrong about the existence of Adam and Noah. (Full Article)

After the conviction of the lead singer of the Christian group, As I Lay Dying, when he admitted he and his band were atheists and only stated they were Christians so as to continue to make music and money in the genre, this latest article about another atheist band posing (POE) as Christians for the money makes me wonder how many other of our favorite Christian musicians are actually atheists?

And they're getting rich because we believe they believe what they sing about.

Rock concert Christianity is the new rave - emotions are pretty susceptible during songs - that's why churches "noodle" or sing slow songs at the end when the pastor is talking - tug on those heart strings

And yet when those who occupied the mic for hours on end are atheists who sing the right songs to the naive audience, sell their swag afterward, and all the while don't believe a word of the lyrics, or the Bible, who's really winning in that programming that's going on? When that audience finds out their fave is godless.

there's something to be said for having a distaste for pop music, even popular Gospel.

i love this one, though, who will never make $$ or be popular for his music,
but over many years has written, recorded and produced 15+ albums glorifying God, unequivocally and clearly presenting the gospel and condemning sin, and never sold even 100 copies of any of them.

Lyrics:

He

Teach me, O Lord, to follow your decrees
Then I will keep them to the end

Give me understanding, and I will keep your law
And obey it with all my heart

Direct me in the path of your commands
For there I find delight

Turn my heart toward your statutes
And not toward selfish gain

Turn my eyes away from worthless things
Preserve my life according to your word

Fulfill your promise to your servant
So that you may be feared

Take away the disgrace I dread
For your laws are good

How I long for your precepts!
Preserve my life in your righteousness

(Psalm 119:33-40)

someone please let me know if/when Hillsong starts recording the Psalms.

Paul was glad that the gospel was preached, regardless of the motive behind it. (Philippians 1:15-18)

we all mourn to see a brother fall, or a wolf revealed, but we should also be glad for what good these men were used for, and pray that we are all taught not to look at a man as an idol, but to Christ, who alone is perfect -- i doubt that any name in your hymnal is free of sin or wrong understanding. even David, what would we say about the Psalms if he were a popular figure today, and we learned about Bathsheba & Uriah?

I don't think the lead singer of As I Lay Dying said the band were atheists but that he was. After all AILD has made a new band called WovenWar with the lead singer from Oh, Sleeper and their music is evidently Christian

i haven't found an interview or statement from the former-AILD-now-Wovenwar bandmembers expressing any statement of faith. the closest is a couple of articles describing them all as "ex-Christians" (including the new singer, who is a guitarist for O, Sleeper)

a couple of e-mags, like IndieVisionMusic in particular have stated that they won't be reporting on Wovenwar because they focus on bands whose members are professing Christians, and they have no evidence so far that that's the case with Wovenwar.

it seems to me that Wovenwar is deliberately not commenting on their spirituality if they can help it, happy to have their popularity boosted by association with Christian Metal. just like Lambesis was ducking the issue for years instead of ever be honest about it, for the sake of the band's success.

if anyone can find an interview with them where they come clean about their faith i'd like to hear it.

the singer said that he thought two others in the band were atheist too, and that the remaining two stopped talking about their faith with the rest of the band, so he felt they had "dropped it"
this interview he gave without the band's knowledge, but i haven't seen where the band denied what he said.

Their music was evidently Christian when the lead singer singing it was atheist. And the rest of the band became so too.
How do they change their minds now that their lead singer is in prison having tried to have his ex-wife, an ex wife, not his present wife, murdered?
They want to keep that money coming in. Because they have never renounced what he said in an interview with them present as he related they were atheists aloud.

[h=1]Convicted Heavy Metal ‘Christian’ Singer Admits Being Atheist, Duped Fans to Sell Music[/h]
A so-called Christian heavy metal band whose frontman was convicted of attempting to hire a hitman to murder his estranged wife has admitted that it duped fans into believing that they were Christian in order to sell their music.

(Sic)"...“I remember one Christian festival where an interviewer wanted one of the guys [in the band] to share his testimony, and he just froze up and let one of the guys who was still a Christian at the time answer the question,” Lambesis recalled. “We laughed about it afterward, but we were only laughing because it was so awkward.” "

(Sic)"...
But Lambesis just recently came forward with the truth about his atheism and the front that the band put on to sell records.
“A lot of Christian parents said, ‘Yes, you can buy this As I Lay Dying CD, because they’re a Christian band.’ They don’t even think to actually check the lyrics,” Lambesis stated. “So when you change your views, you kind of owe it to the fans to be honest.” "

Can't let this get us to go to the extreme in avoiding all music - but should lead to a discerning heart towards true vertical worship of God rather than horizontal praise of man - which there is a ton of, even in regular churches

Good point. When there has evolved a thing called Christian metal, which was the genre As I Lay Dying perpetuated, the community needs to re access its priorities. Sponsoring worldly music genres that reform themselves with lyrics dedicated to Christ, and when we read here that they're not actually so, makes idols of the men and women on the stage.

And as in the article linked wherein the now convicted atheist found guilty of soliciting murder said, parents believe the Christian bands music is good because it is a Christian genre but they don't even bother to read the lyrics.

Just the label sells parents the belief those "stars" on stage are one of us. When as we learn in at least two cases, they aren't. And never were.

But they're rich. Thanks to us.

human beings are unreliable things

I thank God for the example atheists like Gungor and As I Lay Dying present to the Christian community.
When Satan is at work in the secular music industry we would be remiss to think he doesn't have his talons in the religious music industry.
It never occurred to me before the AILD article first came out reporting the arrest of the lead singer. And now this latest with Gungor.

It is a wake up call. There are secular artists who say they've sold their soul to Satan in order to be famous. Beyonce' and Nicki Minaj are both possessed by demons. Not a rumor. Their own admissions in interviews.
Minaj referred to a ritual that brought her demon into her and now "he" wont leave. It even has a name. Roman.
Whereas Beyonce's demon is named Sasha Fierce. She said in an interview it came into her while she was on stage. And when she's on stage now it takes over.

When those artists speak out, as have others, and we learn from their own words that Satan and his army prey on the secular artists, what makes us think he wouldn't occupy himself with the Christian music industry? What's to stop him from gaining entry there too?

Praise God, Gungor and As I Lay Dying tell us the answer;nothing!

Meh easy solution...avoid christian music. At least you dont have to worry about secular bands lying about their faith because thats not how they sell records.

These atheists are exposing themselves. They make headlines having tried to engage a murderer to kill their ex-wife, or they go public and renounce scripture and Jesus publicly. We're not outing them. They're proudly outing themselves. We're just opining.

1.) Gungor never claimed to be an atheist. 2.) It is only said that he has drifted from most of the literal interpretation of the beginning of Genesis...3.) He did say it is impossible to take the entire Bible literally...which is true. You can't. Look at Revelation and Daniel. The perspective he is just choosing to look through is through the symbolic perspective. Although it is more liberal than most would like, he still accepts Jesus as Christ and the miracles of the New Testament. The only crowds having issues with his statement are those who are the most literal interpreters that believe in a literal 7 day creation and a flood that occurred internationally. 4.) I have no problem with what he believes as he still is professing Christ. Come on guys, you need to accept that we are all still trying to figure this out. No one knows all the answers when it comes to Scripture. Yes, Jesus is the answer. I got you ahead of your Jesus juke. But even then, Scripture doesn't answer all questions we have and I think it's time for Christians to stop trying to figure out all the answers and accept that we can't know until the secrets are revealed later...
