Pakistan blasphemy case: Asia Bibi to go to top court - CNN.com

A Pakistani woman named Asia Bibi was sentenced to death for "blasphemy" against Mahomet. The charges stem from a vague accusation from two muslim women. So far her death sentence has been upheld by the lower courts in Pakistan, but she plans on appealing to the highest court, Pakistani Supreme Court. Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International, and even former Pope Benedict have called on Pakistan to release Bibi and amend their so-called "blasphmeny laws."

Bibi has written in a 2012 book according to the article:

"My children, don't lose courage or faith in Jesus Christ."

Praying for this woman. Pakistan has take a few blows to their system, with Malala, the young child who was blasted in the face with a gun to keep her from going to school (and she was a Muslim, for heaven's sake!) just winning the Nobel peace prize, and fighting for the rights of women in those very closed Muslim countries.

Now to fight for the right of Christians to exist in those countries. Maybe this woman will be the next Pakistani to win a Nobel peace prize! I would think that would be real progress in Muslim countries!

I remember the Malala story. She still pops up in the news from time to time. I am glad Malala survived the assasination attempt.

In regards to this story, a Nobel Prize be a nice after-thought, but let's just hope this woman, Asia Bibi, will be granted a pardon and be able to escape from Pakistan. This case has been going on for a few years actually, so it is not as clear cut as other cases lately of Christians and women in the Middle East.

The crux of the case is mainly two muslim women have accused her (Bibi) of "blaspheming" Mahomet. There is no real evidence she even did anything. The problem is that because Asia Bibi is a Christian, the two muslim women's word is viewed as more legitimate despite the fact there is no real solid evidence.

I just wrote N.O.W asking ''where is their protests protesting Islam's repression of women?' and that their silence on the matter casts a shadow on their credibility as a women's rights organization...and gave them the OP's CNN link as an example.

Hmm, I have never heard of N.O.W. This in my opinion is not so much a women's rights issue. After all the fact this woman is up for death sentence is indeed because 2 other women have accused her of blaspheming Mahomet. I see this as more of a legal/logic issue.

The crux of the whole case is based off the testimony of two women, which it is known had personal issues with Asia Bibi prior to their accusation against her. Thus one might logically ponder that the two women are simply inventing a story for spite. The legal issue then is firstly; how does one convict someone to death without any actual evidence? Secondly, in a strange way, if we forget about the western concept of legality and women's rights, of which Pakistan is certainly not going to care about we have to examine Sharia, which constitutes the basis of their legal system. Women in this system are only equal to 1/2 of a man, the two women accusers would thus only constitute the witness of 1 man, and in Sharia 2 or 4 witnesses (depending on country) are required for a conviction. Thus even the two women's testimony ought to be insufficient even within a very strict interpretation of Sharia.

My point is that women are repressed under the Islamic code of law. As that 'religion' grows here in America groups like NOW are deafeningly silent.

A radio show I listen too a lot was talking about this woman the other day... But I like a point they brought up... Where was the media when 1,000's of Christians were being beheaded in Iraq? Where they were being slaughtered in China and Korea...

We have to stand up for this woman, and the thousands that are not heard in the public sector...

There is a foundation for this woman, if memory severs correctly she has a appeal in the supreme court, but it could take up to 5 years to hear the case... By then she will be dead... So they are lobbying to push it through.
