CIA torture report paints picture of agency out of control

The CIA used far more brutal interrogation methods against terrorism suspects than previously disclosed, in secret prisons under a program that failed to extract useful intelligence, and then lied about its conduct and its success to Congress and the American public, according to a newly declassified Senate report.
The so-called torture report finds the CIA program never produced the "ticking time bomb" information that was used to justify it, and that it used harsh interrogation techniques the CIA itself had declared to be ineffective years earlier.
What shocks me more about the brutal Republican Lead Government, was not just it's crimes against humanity but the profound incompetence. After all that torture, there was very little to show for it.

What was even worse back then was that Christians were cheering Bush on with torturing people.

I heard an interview with a high ranking Officer that was totally against torture during those days and was a part of Interrogation in the past and he said that, torture doesn't work except to get false confessions and gives the enemy reason/right/and excuse to torture our own men. :(

Imagine showing kindness to those imprisoned as suspects instead -- acting nicer to them than their own countrymen or governments or religious leaders do and to their families as well --- do you think they'd 'see the Light' after a while of this, if they knew we were sincere in it or our promises to help them & theirs?

I feel literally a bit sick to my stomach after reading some of the things done in here.

To give fair warning, the report is very graphic, and for no wonder given the subject. Here is a 525 page summary of the report by the US Senate Select Committee on Intelligence:

Any intelligence agency will have the tendency to go rogue because the very nature of their work entails secrecy which tends to put them outside of proper checks and balances within government. Of course you point the finger directly at the Administration of the time even though the article clearly states that the CIA went far beyond the boundaries approved by the Administration.

Obviously the greater part of the full report is still classified and probably won't be declassified for at least another decade, but since the committee was dominated by Democrats I'm quite sure that if there was a smoking gun that led to the Bush administration directly it would have been released.

The CIA lied to Congress about the number of detainees it was holding and the treatment they were subjected to, the report by the Democratic-dominated Senate intelligence committee found.
The report also concluded the CIA quickly overstepped the already broad guidelines for detention and interrogation set down by the Bush administration, and that its own senior ranks soon lost count of the number of detainees its operatives had captured and detained in secret sites around the world.

This is a dark moment in this nation's history and I am appalled at what has happened. Treatment of these detainees not only violated numerous international treaties that this country is party to, but basic human decency. I personally believe that whoever pulled the trigger within the CIA and those operatives that were directly in charge of the interrogations need to be brought up on Federal charges, but of course that won't happen any time soon since the very evidence against them is still classified.

Why would they want that to happen?

Righteous indignation. If the politicians were held to the same standard of conduct as the CIA operatives all of congress would be going to Gitmo for a long time.

Claiming nobility while betraying sacred trusts and oaths is beyond despicable. In times of war it is often necessary to do things that one does not prefer to do but to save the lives of those whom are entrusted to their care must be done. Rahab lied to protect the spies.

Nobility will not find a proper application in the Senate.

A 525 page summary of the thousands plus page report is what was released (link above from CNN provides the full document.) It seems a major player behind the report is Senator Diane Feinstein (she is also chairwoman of the US Senate Select Committee on Intelligence.)

Here is Senator Feinstein's full speech regarding the 500+ page summary of this report, the process regarding compiling and publishing of the document, the contents of the report, and historical, political, and legalistic contexts surrounding this subject as a whole.

David, USA did once have probably the best spy network in the world and now we can't measure up to the Israelis, Russians & Chinese. Therefore, we have to rely on animalistic techniques.

I also believe the CIA has a recruitment problems with minotities' candidates.

Does anybody really believe that we got the facts or all of the facts in this report???? Both sides are corrupt and since when can we trust anything that comes out of any government on the earth? Serious....Deception en masse for sure....I don't believe a word that comes out of the government of the U.S., the F.B.I, the C.I.A etc.....All smoke and shadows to keep us guessing and blind to the realities that are behind the scene!

Wow, check out this guys. Vice interviews the 'alleged' architect of the torture techniques.

What will shock you, is the fact that he doesn't think the enhanced techniques are effective, and he thinks waterboarding is horrible. (But yet still was involved obviously. He has issues)

This is a very stark difference to the Fox News hosts frothing at mouth about the techniques and who think it's great.

Torture, in my opinion, is never justified. Torture is revenge, and that belongs only to God. Governments are appointed by God to bring punishment in case of wrongdoing, not for personal revenge. I didn't read the full report, but by skimming through some cases, I felt really sad. Can we as Christians rejoice when evildoers get what they deserve, when we( and all of us) ourselves deserved all of that and more? While we should rejoice when justice is done, and evildoers are rightly punished, we shouldn't forget that they too were made in God's image, regardless of how much they have perverted it.

I hope everyone realizes that this is nothing new? Enhanced interrogation techniques have been around since there was an "around" to be............

As well, this particular debate occurred some years ago, and the decision was made to stop the use of all such techniques, and that has happened..........

So, WHY have Ms. Gloria and the socialist liberals rebirthed this debate? Political points...........this is nothing more than political flim-flam...........

Over six thousand pages, about six hundred made public.........no actual members of the CIA or Administration(s) involved were interviewed............Dems and Dems alone prepared the report..........

And all the while, their glorious leader is ramping up the murder of innocent civilians through the use of Drone attacks........

And, lest we forget, it was this same political movement that about 74 days after Dec. 7th, 1941, arrested and placed 120,000 people in prison camps in California simply because of their heritage............Good old FDR..........gotta love the libs........

So, question is.............which is more horrific? waterboarding a couple of known terrorists or murdering hundreds of innocent civilians (women and children) ?????

By the way......Ms. Gloria was "fully briefed" concerning the use of these techniques during the Bush Administration and later on as well........................her biggest complaint is that the CIA was "not doing enough." She was demanding that they do more to identify those responsible for 9-11 and "get 'em!"

Now she has a problem? Seriously?

These tactics obviously do not glorify God, but we live in a broken world, and its better for our enemies to be inconvenienced with some discomfort than for innocence to be slaughtered. I find it quite amusing that people who have a problem with this are the very people who are silent when innocent people are beheaded by our enemies.

It's not about revenge, its about obtaining information in order to save lives. And sleep deprivation is not torture if it saves lives.

Well I sure wasn't one of those Christians cheering him on. I was opposed to the firs Bush, and the second Bush, and I will be opposed to Jeb Bush if he runs. To Bushes that have helped to run the economy down hill is enough in office, that and for some reason the Bush family has been tied to every conspiracy from JFK to 911. Now I don't believe in every conspiracy I hear, but some of them are very convincing when it comes to the Bushes.
Now him being a part, by knowing it was going on and letting it, of an unethical torture method that is not just morally wrong by not just human standards, but God's too.
