At least he tried....

------------

President Obama referred to the Bible on Tuesday as he was speaking about immigration reform in Nashville, but he confused some of the lines and even threw in a proverb that appears nowhere in the religious text.
“The good book says, don’t throw stones in glass houses,” he said. “Or … make sure we’re looking at the log in our eye before we are pointing out the mote in other folks’ eyes.”

He obviously knows the good book.

"Don't throw stones in glass houses."

he was using a well known phrase to say don't be a hypocrite, which he actually got that wrong, it's "people who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones." which is also what the beam in the eye parable is about...?

There's reference to glass houses in the Bible, its right after the passage, "Step on a crack, break your mother's back."

The book of Billy Joel 5:39

This reminds me when John Kerry quoted John 3:16, but attributed it to John 16:3 which says:

"And these things will they do unto you, because they have not known the Father, nor me."

Big deal. As long as the audience understands the message, everything's good.

It's not an issue of him not knowing the Bible.

It's an issue of "pretending" to know the Bible when you have absolutely no idea what it says about even the most obvious things...
that's what we would call being "dishonest".

However, I don't think he's necessarily any more dishonest than most politicians.
They don't have much of a track record.

The problem is that there are a lot of Christians out there that don't take the time to read the bible, and these are the ones that can easily be lead astray by false doctrines and teachings. I have even came across a few church denominations who still teach their congregation reading and understanding the bible is only for the priest, pastor, preacher, or what ever you call the word giver in your church.
This leads people to walk around not actually knowing the truth, only what they have heard from a preacher who could be using false teachings.

It doesn't matter how he said it, what matters is the message we get from it: Don't judge others if you can be judged yourself. As long as the audience understands the message, everything's good.

The good book is not the bible. It's a secular parody of it. A different book written by a different man.

Criticizing others over such trivial things should be discouraged.

this is a non issue being made into an issue tell me this if you can. For a man to know to do good and to not do it to him it is sin is it in the bible? Yes it is most have never heard it and most will argue it has a different meaning yeah right, but most forget it and will have to google it just to know it is there. many DONT read their bible each day and are not consistent in study so why is a man making a wrong scriptural reference a mistake or even an issue? Pastors do it all the time and I will assure you that many of the posters have too!
just saying

It was not only his misquotation that is at issue, but his use of "scripture" to support what amounts to lawlessness and theft.

Kenneth, I don't remember where I read it, but several years ago I read that fewer than 1 in 20 people who profess to be a Christian read their Bible at all. During my years of teaching young adults, I found it difficult to get many of them to prepare for a weekly Sunday School class. When I read the CC comments, I feel that many here only partially study the scriptures that they are commenting on.

I wouldn't expect you to understand as obvious that you don't, misquotation by anyone is not a issue are you above misquotations if not get a grip. This should really be under the casting stones thread if its that much of an issue that folks get their undergarments in a bunch!!!
