The Supreme Court has denied an appeal from former California high school students who were ordered to turn their American flag T-shirts inside out during a celebration of the Cinco de Mayo holiday at school.

The justices did not comment Monday in leaving in place an appellate ruling that found that school officials acted appropriately because their concerns about racial violence outweighed students' freedom of expression rights.

Administrators feared the American-flag shirts would enflame the passions of Latino students celebrating the Mexican holiday.

The onetime students at Live Oak High School in Morgan Hill, California, argued that school officials gave a "heckler's veto" to the objecting students.

The brother and sister who won a landmark Vietnam era student speech case at the Supreme Court also supported the appeal.

You see and this just makes me upset because they are coming here to live as U.S. citizens, so they should respect our flag and our country. We should not have to continue to keep conforming our lives to them. Just like in the job searching market lately, as people do not want to hire only English speaking people any more. They will hire a person who is multilingual first everyday because of how many people come here that can not speak English or good English.....

Think about it for a moment.

Do you really want the Federal Government banning teachers from telling a student to turn their shirt inside out?

Sure you might object to this incident, and rightly so, but to ascertain that such an incident ought be illegal? That is dangerous.

Ought school officials also be banned from telling students to turn a shirt with filthy language on it inside out because it might offend others? A ban in one area would most certainly legitimase a ban in another area.

Problems like this ought to be dealt with at a local level by with logic and reason. I would be wary of supporting a further destruction of freedom and liberty as all you are doing is help empower machinery which will ultimately be used against you.

I better way to fight that situation would have been for all the students to simply refuse to turn their shirts inside out. That way they would have been asserting their rights.

I have seen the same thing with preaching on the street. There are times when officials will demand one move along due to the notion of "public veto," which is the same reasoning used by the school officials. One does not have to comply and if push comes to shove one can bring suit against the actual violator of the law. That way one does not undermine liberty and one asserts their rights.

If the students had of refused and then been punished for their refusal. Then a legal case could then be wrought upon the violation of fundamental rights then and such cases teach those who would violate liberty to be more careful lest they suffer the consequences. Of course all this has to be taken in the broader context of each situation.

the only way to tell if the School acted appropriately is to wait and see what they do when the shoe is on the other foot. Or, in this case, when it is an American celebration........and Hispanics wear their t-shirts, if they are made to turn them inside out.

If they are, then the Court Ruling would be credible, and so would the Administrators at the School. But until then, we only have what we have.

When I was in school, Cinco De Mayo was just an excuse students used to grab their fake IDs and go out drinking.
Nobody was upset with anybody about anything.

I wonder if the media isn't just so immersed in polemics that they polarize people into camps that barely even existed otherwise... and then it all just trickles down to people like High School Students, who are normally more interested in things like where to take their dates on Friday night.

You have it backwards, friend. What we have here is political correctness trumping liberty, and with my highest respect to you, equating a shirt with the American flag with a shirt with filthy language is completely wrong. Political Correctness has run amok. Back in the day it was known as sedition, but today sedition has a new name and it's wrongfully protected by the highest court in the land.

Polarization is monumental to our political leaders' survival. A united people would focus its attention upon political leaders and you better believe they'd be on a short leash, but a divided people . . .

Didn't Jesus say something about a house divided? :)

Solution. Put an American flag on both sides of all the clothes you wear that day, and stick flags on every wall, desk, locker and all over the administrator(s) who thought up this ridiculous idea's office.

I just don't think "shirt rules" in a school ought to be a Federal Government issue. Things like that ought be local issues only.

The problem with political correction run amok is an issue that needs to be dealt with from the bottom up, not the top down. If the people want to stupidly buy into politically correctness and destroy themselves then that is their own fault.

The left constantly uses race to divide, it's a mind numbing principle, where all along the divide should be on right/wrong; good/evil etc.

School dress codes are supposed to address immodesty, not spiritual or political statements. That's all mine did back in the last 60s. Why the need to control students' thoughts.

Oh, never mind ... stupid question on my part.
