I doubt that method is going to pass muster, either. The symptoms and progression of hypoxia include:

  • Changes in the color of your skin, ranging from blue to cherry red
  • Confusion
  • Cough
  • Fast heart rate
  • Rapid breathing
  • Shortness of breath
  • Sweating
  • Wheezing
Activists aren't going to like that, and since the symptoms of a severe asthma attack are similar -- I know a few people with asthma who have had severe attacks -- I can tell you it isn't a pleasant experience. I think lethal injection would be more humane.

Gassing people?
Gassing people?
If, a nation is going to insist on executing it's citizens, it shouldn't be in a method reminiscent of the Nazi's.

(Please don't take my commentary, to be one that agrees with state executions, I'm expressing incredulity at the method.)

That's what happens when one woman in a foreign country made it her mission as an anti-death penalty proponent to stop pharmaceutical companies abroad from supplying CP states with lethal injection drugs.

Talk about cruel and unusual. Nitrogen gas?
Why not bring back the firing squad. Very humane and far more so than lethal injection. Then foreigners can't stop the act itself. America will always have bullets.

I don't think one can really make a parallel with the Nazis here. Capital punishment is not the same as genocide, and is not biblically prohibited. However, one should strive to treat the convicted with dignity, even though they never gave their victim's that respect. Torturing another human being, even one who has crossed a line, necessitates an individual who also has to cross a line to do so.

I don't know if you've read the case histories of a lot of the people currenty on death row in the United States, but the descriptions are right out of a slasher movie. Multiple homicides and murder rapes are the tame cases on the table.

The days of railroading an innocent minority and putting them to death are over. The majority of convictions now have a lot of corroborating evidence behind them and a story that leaves the jury of 12 scarred for life. It costs more to execute someone than to put them in prison for life due to the appeals process and all the legal battling.

Lethal injection was the de-facto standard until recently when it was determined by some that it was inhumane to put someone to sleep. Since the drugs used had widespread medical applications, and for some reason in this one instance the pharmaceutical companies grew a conscience, it became less viable.

Firing squads are horrific for the people forced to carry out the execution. For that reason alone, I don't think they are a viable option.

Typically only one member of the squad has live rounds. If one is sensitive to the weight of their weapon they can usually tell if they're carrying blanks or live rounds.

Killing someone is traumatic all around. Lethal injection, gas chamber, hanging, firing squad. All methods impact the executioners.

You'll know if it's a blank or not, or you're not a good enough marksman to be carrying out the execution. It isn't the weight, it's the recoil. No kinetic energy, no projectile.

The last firing squad execution was carried out in Utah. They had to clean the blood out of the room, and dig the bullet from the hole it made in the wall. There is still a mark from that bullet hole to this day, and the people who did it see it when they go to execute inmates in the same room via lethal injection.
