Defense Secretary Carter says just 60 Syrian rebels in training

President Obama's $500 million plan to raise an army of Syrian rebels to fight the Islamic State horde is falling far short of its target, attracting only a few dozen recruits to the cause.

"As of July 3, we are currently training about 60 fighters," Defense Secretary Ash Carter told lawmakers Tuesday.

To which Sen. John McCain (R-Arizona) remarked, "That's not a very impressive number."

Pegging the allies' hopes for defeating ISIS to train might still make sense, but not if its going to take a year just ro recruit fighters and vet them for security purposes. How much more is going to be spent before they actually go into the field?

You ask any modern-day Ranger or Marine, "What would it take to defeat ISIS?" They'll tell you, "A well-equipped regiment, air support, and about 30 days."

Shoulda been done a year ago.

$500 million would buy a lot of ex military mercenaries that could reck havoc with ISIS.

Been saying it for years; stop training and funding jihadists. Is it because the government aids and comforts its own enemy?

The Islamic State is the real face of islam. Recognizing this fact is the first step in defeating the Islamic State.
