Ashley Madison infidelity site's customer data stolen - BBC News
Customer data has been stolen from Ashley Madison, a dating website for married people who wish to cheat on their spouse.

The hackers said they had obtained information including "all the customers' secret sexual fantasies and matching credit card transactions".
The site's operator confirmed there had been an "intrusion" but not its extent.
One security expert said a small percentage of the site's user account data had been published online.

The hackers, who called themselves the Impact Team, said they had managed to steal the real names and addresses of the site's users, including those who had previously paid to "delete" their accounts.

side note.

what dose one do, if hackers are holding any web site to ransom. all though the web site has a questionable rep, ware is the line drawn. the web site could easily be a free christian web site. or selling some thing that someone dont like. etc. the point who appointed the hackers, and in real terms what power should they have,.given they stole the info in the first place. strange so many self appointed good self appointed groups or hackers, thinking they have a plan.

If there's a whore of Babylon, Ashley Madison is it. Hackers doing damage to their site. I'm not shedding any tears for them. Serves them right for making mountains of moola off of cheating husbands and wives. Everyone there needs a wake up call. And this is it.

that not a wake up call. its blackmail, god never struck you with lighting when you sinned, or fell short.
so is this something worse , so others that cant protect there web site are in trouble because of internet bullies.

Hacking the Ashley Madison site isn't about morality. Hacking the Ashley Madison site is about money and revenge.

What purpose is being served? The hackers, if they are successful, will line their pockets with money and ruin the "trustworthy" reputation of Ashley Madison. But the hackers know their work doesn't stop cheaters from cheating, it just sinks profit and ultimately Ashley Madison as a business.

The company hired to investigate the incident believes the hackers are actually disgruntled employees. Many of the documents (and a lot of the private information) attained is only available to those working at the company.

Tintin & Jennymae are right, people get what they sow and I'm not shedding a tear.

how dose this answer the blackmail point. thats not true, christian dont get what they deserve. some seem to deem it ok to try and cause fire from heaven on others. yet cant see that grace is to be extended to love your enemies etc.

again my point is at regardless of web site, being held in blackmail.

yes naive is putting simply .

i am all for em blackmailing the site but not the people using it. as for the people using the site, forgiving is fine but they should be held accountable for their actions. forgiveness with no punishment teaches one nothing.

The problem goes deeper; leaked financial data can be used against that cardholder's family, not just that one person.

The word Hacker.... seem to have such bad connotations to it..It really shouldn't. Stereotypical image depiction by Hollywood tv shows/movies and actors have portray it to be negative.

but the nerds who have used the word originally have used it for something else..

Hopefully, this "diagram" illustrates it better. The true sense of the word.

Thats great you gave us a dictionary definition. In common speak everyone knows what someone means when they say hacker. Trying to gloss it over is pointless.

and to royalscot: well to be fair should we feel bad that their sin is being exposed? i dont think so. Does it suck they might get blackmailed? well sure, but they put themselves at that risk.

Yeah, commonly miss used. Not really gloss over it. Just putting the real meaning of hacking back into proper use. Sadly, uneducated people and media(Hollywood) like to hi-jack this word and call it their own.

but hey, freedom of speech. :) Not gonna argue with anyone.

I mean if you want to glorify computer hackers who am i to stop you? but Merriam-Webster disagrees with you...

Hacker-

: a person who plays a sport badly
[h=2]Full Definition of HACKER[/h]1

2
: a person who is inexperienced or unskilled at a particular activity <a tennis hacker>

3
: an expert at programming and solving problems with a computer

4
: a person who illegally gains access to and sometimes tampers with information in a computer system
