Wonder what he means by "we do not have sufficient common-sense, gun-safety laws,”
Perhaps home ownership of anything stronger than a pellet gun.

The government needs to seriously crack down on gun control laws. Families with very young children who could find the gun and hurt themselves or someone else should be required to locked up the gun in a box up high where kids can't reach. No one should be able to use a gun or own one until they are 18 years old, a legal adult. People must have a permit to own and carry a gun. Those with an arrest record for violent crime, or repetitive drug use/ crime should not be allowed to own a gun. Neither will those who have mental/psychiatric disorders.

How could someone call themselves a Christian if they own a gun or are against gun control laws?

I am a Christian and I own a gun.
There is no contradiction in that.

I think it's odd how the media words things, like this is another case of "gun violence" but it's not the guns that are violent it's the people who use them. LOL Or when there is murder they say they may charge the person with a "hate crime"...ya think?

I wonder if they ever consider how violent movies and video games help to corrupt the minds of the youth, or how a godless society is just given over to evil and violence? I guess it's easier to blame the gun for the violence.

What if an attacker broke into your home to do harm to you and your children. Wouldn't you appreciate it if your husband owned a gun at that time?
If you don't have children maybe that's why you're not relating.

Well, for me, I inherited all of mine from my grandfather when he passed away. I don't think me keeping cherished items of my grandfather's as mementos has any bearing on whether I'm a Christian or not. Besides, plenty of Christians hunt, enjoy shooting for sport and recreation, and utilize them to protect themselves from persons that would otherwise do harm to them. Roughly half of all gun deaths in this country are due to suicide by way of firearm, and the next largest chunk stems from gang violence. It isn't like devout Christians are running around gunning people down en masse.

"It's not surprising, then, they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations."

To be expected I guess, mate. Much the same with the gay marriage debate. Once a country folds and submits to gay marriage, the advocates in countries that haven't start pointing saying, "See, so and so have legalized it, why not us?" Places mounting pressure on politicians to make changes.

None of these things has anything to do with a person being a Christian. I say this as a person who is not particularly fond of guns and never want to live in a home with guns.

Here's a couple of problems I see with what you've said.

1. Although responsible gun owners do keep their guns safely stowed from children, how would you propose a LAW about this being enforced? Realistically, it could only be enforced if the police were called out for some other reason or if the parents were reported to CPS for neglect/abuse. Police cannot randomly enter the homes of people to make sure that their home is childproof now. Nor would they be able to do so regarding the gun issue.

2. The idea that no one should be able to own or use a gun unless they are 18 is not practical in areas where people hunt. For example, in Alaska, there are a lot of people who rely on hunting to supplement their food supply. They'll get deer or elk and eat on it all year. I know families in Texas that do the same with deer or wild hogs, etc. Many of my students (in high school) are well versed in how to use rifles because it's part of the lifestyle of their families. I'm not a fan of the government interfering with family cultures (unless certain practices are shown to be abusive).

3. I'm no expert, but it's my understanding that you must have a permit to carry a gun in all 50 states and that background checks are required. Usually when people "slip" through the system it's because they buy guns outside of a certified retailer. For example, if an individual is buying a gun from another individual, there will likely be no "check." If someone has a criminal record, they will simply find another way to buy a gun than a traditional retailer.

It's a rather complex issue that isn't easily "flattened" by propaganda from either direction. There IS a problem with guns in the U.S. There are a lot of them and people who are foolish or evil have access that probably isn't good. However, there are also lots of responsible gun owners who have their weapons for a lot of practical reasons.

No offence but a few things......

There are laws on the books that are not enforced
Criminals will get weapons and if they cant get a gun will use a knife or machete

and the biggie.....

Your last statement reeks of ignorance and has nothing to do with being or not being a Christian and is nothing more than just your misguided opinion!

Yeah I agree.....seems like I had seen some of your politicians arguing for it (gay rights) while I was down there this last time and if I remember right it was brought up about the U.S. legalizing it...........makes me sick for sure....hey by the way...when I was there and was in Westfield Mall in Penrith I was approached by a lady who worked for the paper and she was doing interviews on gay marriage....after I gave her 15 minutes of what for she was never so glad to get away from me...of course she was for gay marriage........HAHAHAH she beat foot as fast as she could when I got done...of course my stance didn't make the paper!
