Notorious litterbug convicted of trashing Colorado national forest earns prison term

homeless man convicted of trashing a Colorado national forest with more than four tons of garbage was sentenced earlier this week to prison.

Benjamin Yoho, 41, was given a six-month sentence behind bars after a judge found him guilty of littering a large area of Uncompahgre National Forest north of Telluride, Fox 31 Denver reports.

“This was no ordinary case of littering in the National Forest — this was full-scale trashing of the public lands and merited a term of incarceration,” Colorado U.S. Attorney John Walsh said.
What I want to know is, when did the pot haze around Telluride clear up enough for them to find the dump site?

Seriously, the pic that goes with the story ...

... is disgusting. That's a beautiful, pristine part of Colorado. My wife's and my favorite spot is around Uncompahgre Peak.

The guy deserves jail time.

He should have had to pick up the garbage...... That's how it would have been done in my day.

Two things I despise, stealing when they are not staving and deserves no pity and littering.

I understand the mess like that is unacceptable. The guy is all ready homeless though, I don't see where he would have taken the trash anyways besides trying to burn it or bury it.

My initial thought was that it be more fitting to simply make him clean up the mess. Then I read the article which said the amount of litter and that some volunteers did clean it up all ready. So then I must wonder about throwing him in jail. In some ways indeed that might be preferable to trying to survive the wild. Being homeless is no light matter. However the state of jails and prisons in America is no light matter either! Just hoping best for everyone in this.

My thought for as far as the government be concerned seeing that they jail him anyways no matter what I opine. Perhaps the government could get a program or something for him for when he is released so that he does not have to go to living in the woods again.

Let us not be debbie-downers though. All ready some good has indeed occurred. Note in the article it says volunteers did clean up the litter. If the article is true they say that is around 4 tons of garbage. So praise God for helping and making the volunteers and instilling in them with a goodly quest. Some good has been done all ready, let us not overlook the good. Let us hope that even the homeless man can find some respite and comfort in Jesus.

Here, the cartels and sureno street gangs post armed guards to protect the weed fields in the national forests but they don't dump trash every where because it would attract too much unwanted attention. They'll shoot you in the face and bury you in the dirt though if you trip across one of their grow sites.

It's obvious that if we're getting a litter problem in a national forest, it's due to lack of drug cartels.

The cartels need to step up and deal with this...
I'm starting to lose confidence in them.

Lol, funny post maxwel. You realize though that they put people into oil barrels, light them a fire, and drink cervezas while watching them burn to death for entertainment right?

When I first saw this thread I thought it read Forest Gump. Where did a homeless man manage to get so much stuff
in the first place? It is a great pity. Looks like a very beautiful place.
