Woman happier than ever after fulfilling lifelong dream of being blind

Jewel Shuping says she is happier than ever after becoming blind. The North Carolina woman told Barcroft TV that becoming blind has always been a lifelong wish of hers and she is happy she has now fulfilled it.

According to Barcroft TV, the 30-year-old suffers from Body Integrity Identity Disorder. BIID is a condition where able-bodied sufferers believe they are meant to be disabled.

At 26, Shuping found a psychologist who was willing to help her fulfill her dream. She claimed the doctor put numbing drops in her eyes followed by drops of drain cleaner.

"It hurt, let me tell you. My eyes were screaming and I had some drain cleaner going down my cheek burning my skin...But all I could think was 'I am going blind, it is going to be okay.' "
There is no evidence she actually was blinded by some whacko psychologist, but the statement itself is sufficient to demand this woman be hospitalized as dangerous to herself. I find it extremely difficult to believe a licensed professional would actually put drain cleaner in a woman's eyes, but if someone did, he needs to be incarcerated. She may have done it herself, but someone needs to get to the truth.

She didn't want to be blind as much as she wants to be taken care of.

This woman is in need of serious mental health intervention. I wonder how long, and how many others knew that she wanted to blind. During the mental health treatment of oldest son, we met the family of a forty year old woman who had pinch scars all over her body. The treatment at that time was the first treatment that she had received. That was 1966. It's a shame that self injury mental health issues still happen. As far as I am concerned the psychologist (?) in the OP needs to be locked up and the key thrown away. The woman who wants to be blind needs serious help

I certainly hope she is lying about the psychologist. I don't see how that would even be legal.

Of all the disabilities I could be victim to Blindness would be the worst apart from being Paraplegic. I cant imagine anyone wanting to be disabled. I also find it hard to believe someone would make her blind either.

You know, this is not at all unlike the same desire many Christian seem to live with daily... the need to be punished for "being such a bad person". I think it is one of the largest deterrents to being able to accept Jesus' unearned grace and mercy.

Next logical step after death with dignity, now it's dependence with a dream.

Personally, I think if she applies for benefits, she should be denied. This is her own action that blinded her, which is me saying she did it herself, but it stands even if she found one of my fellow "professionals" to do this to her. I still think that needs to be investigated. Regardless, she has no business acquiring federal disability benefits.

She has body dysmorphic disorder, which is a disorder where people innately feel like some part of their body is "wrong" in some way: some cases present with feelings of bodily imbalance (one of my shoulders is bigger than the other, I need to cut part of it away), and others with feelings of excess, alien body parts (I should only have one leg. Why have I got two? This leg doesn't belong to me). It's actually a severe mental illness, and it has presented in this woman as relates to her vision (this vision doesn't belong to me; I shouldn't be able to see. Why can I see?)

It's a genuine condition, and while I get that she's done it to herself (and if her psychologist did help her do it, the psychologist should lose his or her medical license at the very least), I don't feel like the knee jerk "don't give her any financial help" reaction is warranted. What she's done is in principle not a whole lot different than a person suffering from anorexia nervosa who starves herself into liver failure and mental regression.

What she really needs is close care and rehabilitation.

More alphabet soup. Maybe abortion is a good thing after all.

Sorry, that's wrong of me, but this kind of stuff makes me sick.

She has body dysmorphic disorder ...
I doubt that. I've dealt with body dysmorphic disorder in conjunction with addiction. All in all, choosing booze or drugs to numb the pain of not liking what you see when you look in the mirror is far more rational than what this woman did.

In fact, she has far more going on inside her head than BDD. Self-destructive behavior is not part of the diagnostic criteria for BDD. Those are, from the DSM-5:
  • Repetitive, compulsive behaviors in response to the appearance concerns (mirror checking, skin picking, reassurance seeking, constant clothes changing),
  • Mental compulsions (mentally checking one's appearance against others').
The latter must be included in behavior or it is not possible to diagnose BDD.

... which is a disorder where people innately feel like some part of their body is "wrong"
Your definition is, in fact, wrong. You took it from the article I posted. The DSM-5 definition is "The individual must be preoccupied with one or more nonexistent or slight defects or flaws in their physical appearance." That is a far cry from feeling those defects, real or imagined, a "wrong." I'm sure you'll quibble about that. Don't bother. Nuances become canyons in the translation from what lay persons see, versus what the counselor, therapist, or diagnostician sees.

Don't try to tell me what the diagnostic criteria are for mental health disorders. I have spent years learning them, and I still have to go the DSM-5 for guidance and clarity. Efforts to know and understand the mind and personality should not be left to amateurs -- a misnomer, because there is no such thing as an "amateur" therapist or counselor, as they would be extremely dangerous.

The so-called "professional" who diagnosed this woman was not an amateur, they were at the very least irresponsible, and most likely incompetent. If it was a mental healthcare professional who blinded her, he or she is even worse than that. What part of "do no harm" does that idiot not understand?
