28 Americans among the crew on cargo ship missing in Hurricane Joaquin

The U.S. Coast Guard resumed searching Saturday for a large cargo ship with 28 Americans on board that vanished as Hurricane Joaquin slammed the Bahamas.

Officials said the 735-foot ship, known as El Faro, was en route to San Juan, Puerto Rico, from Jacksonville, Florida. They said they received notification that the ship had lost power around 7 a.m. ET Thursday near Crooked Island in the eastern Bahamas, one of the islands most battered by the storm.

The Coast Guard said the crew told officials the ship had taken on water but that they eventually contained the flooding, Fox30 reported. Authorities said five Polish nationals are also on board the missing ship.
According to the information the Coast Guard received before it lost contact with the El Faro, the ship was very close to the eye of the storm when it lost power. Coast Guard C-130s tried to locate the ship in the area from which it was last known to be, but thus far without success, even to the point of finding no debris that might indicate the ship sank, or broke up.

Too much junk sitting on-deck. Causes a shiop to list when it shifts, which is what the experts suspect happened when the ship got into to storm.

Coast Guard spots debris field in search for missing cargo ship

U.S. Coast Guard crews reported spotting a 225-square-mile debris field on Sunday of Styrofoam, wood, cargo and other items near the last known position of a missing cargo ship.

A C-130 trying to locate the El Faro reported the debris, according to a tweet.
That's truly saddening, but with the ship having been caught in the midst of 130-mph winds and 40-foot waves from Joaquin, an alternative outcome was unlikely. Praying they find survivors, and for the families of this crew.

Really sad. Will pray.

Headed to Puerto Rico and not the Gulf, OK.
