WASHINGTON — Russian submarines and spy ships are aggressively operating near the vital undersea cables that carry almost all global Internet communications, raising concerns among some American military and intelligence officials that the Russians might be planning to attack those lines in times of tension or conflict.
The issue goes beyond old worries during the Cold War that the Russians would tap into the cables — a task American intelligence agencies also mastered decades ago. The alarm today is deeper: The ultimate Russian hack on the United States could involve severing the fiber-optic cables at some of their hardest-to-access locations to halt the instant communications on which the West’s governments, economies and citizens have grown dependent.

A good example of the fragility and vulnerability of modern technology and civilization.

I cannot help but imagine a horde of Russians being bored to death trying to separate useful data from newspaper comment feeds/ forum trolls / blogs about make- up etc etc

They also know how to play the long-game and appeal to transcendent purpose.

Oh, and they have a foreign policy.

And no, despite my profile picture and previous statements, I am not that much of a Russophile. While I admire certain aspects of Russian culture, I find the invincibility and moral righteousness some Western conservatives ascribe to them to be a little overblown. Funny how the Russians would cut one the conduit of one of their greatest "peacetime" weapons since the 20th century- propaganda and cultural subversion.

Patton would have owned them in a land war.

All of this to say "I'm not one of those."
