From the day children first step out onto the playground, friendships are a key part of life. According to Gallup polling data from 2004, 98 percent of Americans report having at least one close friend (the average number of friends is nine).

But friendship may be in trouble. Americans reported an average of 10 friends apiece in 1990, according to Gallup data, and a slew of sociology studies find that Americans have become more socially isolated over the decades. For example, a 2006 study on the number of friends people felt they could discuss important matters with found that the number fell from an average of 2.94 in 1985, to 2.08 in 2004.

I had a friend once...

That is not entirely tongue-in-cheek. I'm the type who prefers a few deeper friendships to many shallow ones. So I tend to be close to only a few fellows, but have many people who I chat with casually. I'm also content being alone, and sometimes avoid time with friends just so I can catch up mentally and emotionally. It's a form of introversion, but not the extreme kind. Even now, I think I am below-average on the number of friends. Especially if we can't count family members!

Throughout my life, I have tended to have no more than one or two closer friends at a time. I don't keep up constantly with people at a distance, but when we get together, I don't think anything of the time between. I guess I take a bit of a long-term perspective on friendships. :)
