Jamie Gilt: Mom Shot By Toddler Could Be Heading To Jail

“… Jamie placed the gun… under the front seat of the truck… the gun apparently slid back to the rear floorboard, below where her four-year-old son was seated in a booster seat. According to family members, the child recently learned to unbuckle his seatbelt. Investigators discovered the child removed himself from the seat, presumably to grab a toy from the floorboard, saw the gun, picked it up and accidentally fired through the rear of the driver seat… The bullet struck [Jamie] in the back and exited through her chest.”
I am a huge 2nd amendment rights advocate that strongly believes in treating guns like weapons and not toys. Safety, especially when around children, should be taken at every measure and without failure. I'm just happy that the mother survived but fear for the psychological trauma that could go to her son as he grows up knowing he shot his mother.

What kind of punishment do you think Jamie Gilt should face (if any)? Should she be allowed to have guns? Should she serve time?

Daily Mail reports Jamie Gilt has a criminal history. In 2013, she was arrested by the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Department for stealing over $500 worth of shorts from the Juniors department of Dillards and concealing them in her baby’s stroller. She was charged with a felony count of Grand Theft retail. Officers released her on a $2,503 bond.

I mean why would she represent the majority of gun owners..even if she did make a horrible mistake? Don't the liberals always tell us we cant condemn groups because of a few bad actors?

Oh, she is no spokeswoman for me on the 2nd amendment. It takes more than a love for guns to represent the 2nd amendment. It's just a sad story that I came across. I think there is a group of people who think we are all like her. I'd like to dispel that notion in any way that I can.

80% of the American People are gun-owners ..and then they are some that will look for any possible excuse to disarm the America people ... yes its bad but I don't think its really a game changer in the whole gun debate ..especially with the Islamist running around shooting and blowing people up. The mass shootings are far more harmful to the gun debate..especially if its a white guy who ever voted Republican.

I agree it is a sad story and was unfortunate it happened and yes I think that any weapon should be place were a child can not get their hands on it the safety should have been on it probably should have been put in a case or something in the glove box or what ever there are thousands of could of would of should of's the point is accidents like this do happen and it is because people do not think they are not being safe or it is not going to happen to them etc... no i do not think she should be charged it was an accident

Only charge I can think of is for her not properly securing the weapon. Such as with a trigger lock, or placing it in a place not available to the child.

The child wasn't shot, so I don't see how it can be considered child endangerment or some such, but the anti 2nd Amendment activists will find a way I suppose.

Is child endangerment because the child to have shot herself. If you're going to own guns then it might be a good idea to keep them out of reach of children

I didn't think it was legal for a felon to own a firearm. But then again I guess a felon doesn't care about what's legal?

Totally, as a gun owner you should keep them away from children. However, having grown up in a place in the country where many own guns, I was taught from a very young age that they were off limits unless I had adult supervision. A four-year-old is able to be taught such basic safety as that.

I read about this recently. Actions of stupidity like this is the reason so many are becoming anti-gun! It's not secret I am conservative and I support our right to bear arms, but when stupidity of people like this woman ks
prominent then we do have a serious problem. A "right" does not mean you should act foolishly. This woman doesn't understand the 2nd amendment and it's obvious by what happened.

She all ready been shot, she don't need to be jailed. Just take her guns away before something worse happens to her or her family.

I am borderline RABIDLY pro-gun. I've been "into" guns nearly all my life... go shooting, reload, cast my own bullets, the whole shebang.... (no pun intended... really)

I also believe in being as close as possible to flawlessly responsible in keeping guns away from children who are too young to be taught responsibility and safety.

I don't know the whole story of what happened, but it sounds as if she had a mental lapse in safe gun carry/storage. Those kinds of mental lapses get people killed.

I don't know what kind of legal action can, or should be taken against her, but her child was definitely in danger.

I sincerely hope she learned a permanent lesson from this... I'm glad it wasn't worse than it was.
