It is heart rending that we send our young men and women into combat and some are lost. It would be better to send our politicians who create the conflicts into combat but we know that will never happen.

I am concerned that images like the one above do not become too much of a worship of the lost loved one. Memories you bet never forget but lying on the grave with a special quilt?

Yea not all soldiers are worth remembering. Some really want to help the world, change things for the better, and just protect people and help improve people's lives; some do it for the money and the attention; others join because they just want to kill people.

My great grandfather served in World War 2. My grandfather served in Egypt. They both believed in protecting civilians, providing security to those who can't provide it for themselves, and fighting invaders. When Hitler was rampaging through Europe he was the aggressor. Men and boys from the UK went to stop his invasions, to stop his atrocities. Many of them retained their sense of right and wrong and did what was right, but others -- many others -- took the opportunity to rape German women; to commit theft; and to murder needlessly.

I'll remember good soldiers who fight for good causes; who protect; who retain their humility and their right-judgement even when they have the power and the opportunity to do otherwise. But the others: those who fight only for the sake of fighting; who murder without regret and guilt; who can sleep easy after dropping a bomb in a building full of innocents; those who do not question -- even secretly in their minds -- warsin which they belong to the aggressing party: those kinds of soldiers do not deserve remembrance.

I don't know you personally, but from your picture you have a gorgeous little child with you and you look to be doing well for yourself. Single parenthood must not be easy. All the best to you.

I'm sorry for your loss.

I think you have to take into account that this is a new mother,on her own to raise this child. If she finds strength from this I cannot see a problem.

The picture is not mine. It is to remind people to thank a soldier for the sacrifice they have given. It not a political statement. Its about loss suffered. In the US we thank those who serve, most of us do. That is what Memorial Day is about.
There are good and bad in people in any profession. But we do not fault,or tar with the same brush, all soldiers, doctors, teachers, preachers because of the few who have done wrong.

You Americans deify soldiers, as though all are heroes from the minute they sign their contracts. Not all are heroes. Many are villians. So again, I will thank the soldiers who uphold their morals, fight for noble causes and do not kill innocents.

And yet, many a "good" man's life was saved by the very ones you choose not to recognize.

Im not American. I live here. I deify no one. There are people in every profession that are immoral. Priests, pastors, teachers, doctors,nurses..... MANY soldiers are not villains! And they dont kill innocents. There are a handful of evil people in every profession. This thread is not a place for yoeu to spout nonsense and denigrate soldiers from this country. You can say whatever you wish about your own. This is Memorial Day and we thank our soldiers. Do what you want to your own. Im asking politely that you start your own thread about your dislike of soldiers and leave this thread as it was intended to be, a memorial. Please stop derailing.

Banned for what? Being grateful to good soldiers? Disliking others who murder innocents or abuse power? That's hardly a trolling position. It's a genuine position that most of the rest of the world take towards their military service men and women.

I've never heard a German or a Frenchman or an Italian or an Irishman talk about how happy they were they their soldiers bombed a hospital in Basra or demolished a school full of children as collateral, or nuked a Japanese city.

I'm just saying. Thank people who better the world instead of worshipping every single person that dons a pair of khakis and fires an M16. It's not NORMAL to be military obsessed like you lot are; to treat anybody in a uniform with special attention and teach your kids to salute and sing military anthems in schools. You have a hero complex. It's downright freaky to the rest of us. The same way you treat cops like theyre special. It's a well-known indicator of a police state at a high risk of becoming a fascist one.

I have soldier friends, but I don't treat them like celebrities. They're normal people who wanted to help other people but were dragged into a dirty war as a result of your ex president. If they were to die I would remember them, because they are good men. Im sure that you know many good men who serve, too. But those others, who go out just to kill and hurt and cause destruction: why should they get the privelage of being remembered in the same thought as good men?

Ive asked you to stop trying to argue and put your spin on this thread. This is for the American Memorial Day. I want to remember those who have died. Stop arguing and go make you own thread on your own beliefs. This is for Memorial Day and thanking our soldiers. If you do not stop I will report it.
