I don't need to pledge allegiance to a flag to love the country, though. The words speak for themselves. The principles are underneath what the country stands for (the republic), not the actual flag itself. As we are on the subject, this nation hasn't been a nation "under God" for a very long time now. This is not the same country you or anyone else thinks this is.
God allowed the elections of Obama, Bush, and multiple others.. He will allow the election of Clinton or Trump (some proclaim Trump the American messiah whereas others deem him as ruthless politically as Hillary). So God is allowing America to make its own bed and lie in it because we have screwed it up for years and years. I associate myself first and foremost with Christ. Not a flag.
So the question becomes and as some have tried to make it here.....is pledging allegiance to the flag and what it stands for a solemn promise and as such is it idolatry....or is it simply stating that you are loyal to the essence of what it means and stands for and for what it has given you? Some have chosen to bring in the vow thing...and the idolatry thing....which is exactly what I expected would happen. I am sure that many have vowed with all their heart to follow Jesus...but so did Peter...and he failed....what makes you think when you are given a pee down your leg opportunity you won't do the same? Lol
For me, when I pledge allegiance to the flag, I am showing respect for what others have died for to give to me. I often ponder the guys in valley forge with inadequate clothes and shoes, their feet and hands black from frostbite. When you have something to fight for besides yourself, it changes everything and I would gladly give my life to give my son and his children the opportunities that you and I have had in this great nation....and I pledge my allegiance to that.

Exactly! It does not stand for what it used to stand for......especially good values and freedom.....today you are in effect pledging to a socialistic nation with a mask of democracy but no true representation by the people.....to pledge today means nothing as the country has been severely altered from freedom to police state....

I joined the Navy pretty soon after hs but that was 1970 and it wasn't like I was patriotic, it was more like I had a birthdate that practically guaranteed my getting drafted and sent to vietnam. My tactic didn't work tho. 5 years later the US pulled out of VN and turned our backs on the whole thing and forgot about it. Didn't even report about the khmer Rouge till about 5 years after it happened. Now we've been fighting a bunch of guys in toyotas for the past 14 years and every time we gain ground we give it back and then fight for it again so we can give it back. It's like hamburger hill over and over and over again. I mean, I hate war and so does everybody else, but good grief, what are we doing? It's not like I don't have allegiance to the US and love many things about her, but I can't, in good conscience, advise a young person to join up and be in harm's way for such fickle leaders bending to whatever wind blows the wheat. So I don't know, I still love our country and will pledge my allegiance to her without the intent of idolatry. However, the further these leaders stray from a Judeo/Christian moral and ethical foundation coupled with above, the harder it's becoming.
