Algeria has opened a rehab clinic for addiction to the internet.

By no means the first, they join a number of other countries that recognize this as a public health concern.

What do we ((here on the internet, LOL)) think of this?

Full story in the link, but i'm more interested in the basic ideas behind this than the specifics of this particular clinic:

First internet addiction rehab clinic opens in Algeria

This is a real issue. What does it do to societies on large scales? What does it say about - and what are the implications of - a culture that fully embraces this? IS this all 'old codger' talk or a serious problem? Is there a 'good' way to integrate this kind of internet connectivity into people's day to day lives? Is it inevitable? How 'unplugged' should we be vs. 'plugged' ?

I know...I know...because I am replying it means I have something negative to say...whatever.

Personally, I can't wrap my mind around being addicted to the Internet. Addicted to what, precisely? It might be that my "old fart" is showing, but I distinctly remember a time before the Internet, and it was good. Unfortunately as a citizen of Earth in the 21st century, and with my school studies, I have to maintain a certain level of Internet use. However, I do a very good job of abstaining from a lot. After I am done with my PhD, the entire Internet can crash and burn as far as I am concerned. The Internet has made a lot of things very convenient...too convenient.

What does it do to societies on large scales?
do we not see it every day? :(

people saying things they (i hope?) would never say face to face?
people, in fact, losing face to face relationships in favor of faceless ones online?

eh, maybe it is 'old codger' talk.
but remember when you'd go outside your house and interact with real folks? (and half the time i include myself!)

surely there are ways in which we can, in Godly, God directed ways, integrate this tech into out lives.
we need wisdom for that.

and then there are the times i must avail myself of the little red square at the top right corner of the window
and talk to humans i can see. like now. :)

notwyown beat me to my first point:
people saying things they (i hope?) would never say face to face?
people, in fact, losing face to face relationships in favor of faceless ones online?

and then there is the facebook syndrome: If you don't get 50 likes on a post/ update / opinion, you feel worthless

and also, doing things that were previously seen as something you just do (like doing the dishes) must now be bragged about

I am all for a U Tube rehab clinic I think CC Members should get free treatment as an act of compassion. Cases of Trump Mania should have first priority along with flat earthers.

CBC Radio ran a piece recently about how difficult it can be for teachers to get students to put their phones away. I think when it gets to that level of intrusion it speaks volumes of there being a real problem.
