Injured bald eagle stops traffic in Clearwater
  • Times staff

Wednesday, October 5, 2016 8:17pm

CLEARWATER — Police and fire officials rescued an injured bald eagle Wednesday morning from the middle of Countryside Boulevard.

Officials said the bird was attempting to eat or grab a dead animal from the road when it was struck.

Two lanes going northbound on the road were closed as police and firefighters steered traffic away from the bird.

The bird made it to the side of the road, and was taken in by a wildlife rescue specialist, officials said.

The Owl's Nest Sanctuary for Wildlife will care for the eagle as it heals.

80-Year-Old Woman Marries For First Time, Weds 95-Year-Old From Nursing Home

Two elderly residents of a North Miami Beach nursing home are proof that you’re never too old to find love.
Maria Cobar, 80, and Carlos Suarez, 95, tied the knot November 10 at a ceremony inside the Aventura Plaza Rehab and Nursing Center. It was Cobar's first marriage, according to the nursing center.

The two met when Suarez moved in across the hall from Cobar, who has lived there since 2009, less than a year ago. They met in the hallway, and were quickly attracted to each other. She gave him a tour, then at the arts and crafts activities he came and sat next to her. The two became known as the love birds of the complex.

Suarez’s first reaction to seeing his future bride was, "not bad," which quickly turned to "I'm not letting her get away," according to NBC's "Today" show.

Cobar came to the United States from Guatemala as a 26-year-old, becoming a nanny and housekeeper, the nursing center said. Suarez, whose wife died in 2006, arrived from Cuba 56 years ago with her and their son before starting a jewelry business, "Today" reported.

The pair love to dance — though he's usually in a wheelchair next to Cobar, who has a walker. They also like to watch the news and the sunset together, the nursing home says.

The nursing home provided the venue as well as items like balloons, the arch and musical entertainment, while Cobar's daughter got the flowers and decorations, according to "Today." Employees chipped in to surprise them with a mariachi band for them to dance to. It managed to get Suarez out of his wheelchair and dancing with his bride.

“My mom never worried about looking for a husband, I was her priority her entire life,” Cobar's daughter, Ana Cobar, told the Miami Herald. “The day finally has come and I’m so happy for her, she deserves this.”

The two now live in the same room and will take their first trip out of the home as a couple this Thanksgiving, spending the day at the home of Cobar’s daughter, "Today" reported.

How do you hit a 4ft Bald Eagle? Come on, man!

I would imagine it would be like hitting a deer or a moose. My daughter's friend was driving her car, and hit a deer. She swerved to avoid him, and he just clipped the front end. A lot of damage to the car. When we went out to pick it up, I walked to see the crash site. There was this giant liver sitting on the highway. It looked like it was in pristine condition. The dead deer made it to the ditch. Sorry for him but they shouldn't jump into headlights!

When hubby and my daughter went to repair the front end, I helped cleaning up the blood and mess. There, caught in the headlights was a liver duct. The accident had sliced the duct off cleanly. It looked surgical!

I hope the eagle is ok. We used to have lots of them when I lived on the north coast of BC. They were almost pests! I had never heard of one getting hit by a car, though!

I've been driving for 35 years and I am of the opinion that 80-90 percent of auto-animal impacts are preventable if people just paid a little more attention. Not implying that was the case with your daughter's friend. Glad she's okay.

My first husband and I hit a dog on the way home one night many years ago in Kentucky. We saw the dog and swerved to miss it and if it had kept going the way it was we would have missed him but he jogged back right into the car at the last moment and there wasn't anything we could do.

We went on home and husband got a gun (he was a police officer) and went back to put the dog down too badly hurt for help and found the owners and apologized for hitting the dog... so sad.....

With regards to deer...........it's NOT THAT FIRST deer that gets ya............most often, it's the next one.......as you focus on missing that first one.......OUTTA NOWHERE COMES DA SECOND ONE AND BAM!

Seriously...........

There is a stretch of road near my house that I used to travel every day, and it is famous for the number of auto/deer accidents........goodness..........I used to "white knuckle drive" that road every time.........ESPECIALLY AT NIGHT.

Speaking of white knuckle driving we had a bridge go down after a ship hit the decaying pilings and cars drove off into the water and some landed on the ship, ....the bridge was the sunshine skyway in St. Petersburg, FL... Anyway for quite a while the span just hung there and I had an Aunt living in Bradenton and I had to drive on the other span left that they made two way instead of two spans one way each....

Well it was raining and I held onto the steering wheel so tight that I had marks in my hands by the time I got across the bridge cause it was just spooky to drive in pouring rain and see that span and part of the bridge gone....

This happened thirty years ago.....it was horrible.

That is so sad :( My daughter has had her dog for over a year now and I suppose
she can't imagine life without her... she really is such a character... the dog, that is :D
They really are wonderfully lovely creatures :)

Speaking of bridges, on average we seem to have one incident a year where
a double decker bus tries to go under a low bridge and the top deck is ripped
off.

The excuse is usually that the driver forget he was driving a double decker that
day. We have single and double decked buses in the UK drivers switch around
between them both.

You hit a bridge and took it down? Fortunately, Nationwide was on your side.
