Some psychosis cases an 'immune disorder' - BBC News

Some patients sectioned with psychotic conditions, such as schizophrenia or bipolar disorder, may actually have a treatable immune disorder, say Oxford University scientists.
A study in the Lancet Psychiatry suggests up to one in 11 cases of psychosis may involve antibodies attacking parts of the brain.
Blood samples were taken from 228 people in a UK-wide trial.
The finding is controversial, but opens up a new way of treating patients.
Sarah Galloway, 25, from Gateshead, is now recovering after her immune system turned on her.
She was in the final year of her chemistry degree when things started to go wrong.
"I deteriorated in a matter of days," she says.
"I hallucinated that my body has morphed spiders' legs or rabbit ears, I've seen them there, I've felt them there.
"I get strange ideas in my head that someone is trying to kill me or I have to kill someone, and then a lot of it has resulted in self-harm."

Sarah was rapidly sectioned by doctors, given a diagnosis of bipolar disorder and treated with anti-psychotic medication.
However, a chance blood test turned up something unusual in her immune system.
Antibodies should protect the body, but instead Sarah's were attacking the surface of her brain's cells and disrupting their function.
That transformed Sarah's treatment, and she was given drugs to suppress her immune system.
She even had troublesome antibodies filtered out of her blood.

Oops don't know what happened there, the page froze before I could finish
editing it.

Anyway i thought this was interesting, that there may be immune response
issue which causes some mental disorders.

I was brought up in foster care by my aunt, but my real mum had
schizophrenia (hence the reason I was brought up in foster care).
She also had a thyroid problem which we now know was due to
an immune disorder.

I think its also interesting from a Christian perspective, there are many Christians
who automatically think mental disorders are due to demon possession!

I wonder if in years to come they will discover that many are due to viruses or
illnesses affecting the brain etc.

You know of John's hospital-induced delirium when he first woke up, but we thought he had another bout of it when he was in the nursing home. Scared us both.

Ends up it wasn't that. One of the side effects of Warfarin in hallucinations. (Good thing he was taken off that. He's the kind of guy who keeps taking prescriptions no matter what. He's allergic to a certain kind of antibiotic to the point the rash on his hands blistered. He kept taking it.
) Something else that can cause it -- prescription drugs.

One of the most misunderstood, by many Christians, is mental health. I have epilepsy. I've been told that I'm demon possessed. I've been told not to take my medication. I've been told that I need deliverance. I've been told that all I have to do is pray and God will heal me. I can go on and on. The fact is, there is a medical reason for my seizures. I won't go into detail, but when a seizure occurs, my brain response to stimuli slows down to a crawl. No one, including most neurologists understand why, but they know how to treat it.

I look forward to the day when we actually find the real cause and preventative treatment for this and other mental health issues. Until then I will continue to call out quack Christians who have no business advising the mentally ill.

A lot of that happens, I've seen it on CC too.
Its strange how any illness affecting the brain/mind are quickly catogorised as demon possession
by some Christians. It's as if they think anything from the chin up is not a real ailment.

I cannot imagine people telling someone with epilepsy that they are possessed.... how crazy is that?

When I was in high school, we had a new kid start going there, in about the 9th or 10th grade. Nobody said much to us about him, other than "he's new, it's his first day here"....

About halfway through our first class he had a grand mal seizure... books fell on the floor, and he, of course, did, too. After about 15 or 20 seconds of him unconscious, shaking (seemed like a lifetime to us), he came out of the seizure, and gathered up his books and sat back down. this was a semi-terrifying event to all of us, who had never witnessed a seizure before.

As time went by, we became accustomed to the occurrence, he would have, on average, 4-5 seizures like that every day. We learned to simply try to prevent him from hurting himself when he fell, and sort of hanging with him until he came around again....

to this day, his epilepsy is the worst I've ever seen.... but even then (late 60's early 70's) we knew that epilepsy was a disorder, not a mental illness or demon possession...

bless you, brother...

some issues are due to demon posession However many are a physical issue. either a neuralogical disorder or phsycological issue or an illness somewhere in the body. However, just because many of these are physical cases, doesn't mean we should dismiss the possibility of a spiritual problem like demon posession.

In my lifetime, I have never met a mentally ill person who was demon possessed. My mother was a Behavior Analyst and I got to know a lot of mentally ill people.

Good for you, still doesn't mean it doesn't exist.
It takes a LOT of discernment to be able to tell the cause of the problem. Sometimes demon possession, sometimes psycological, sometimes neurological. Possibilities shouldn't be thrown out the window. Rather, start with the least invasive problem and work your way up and stick with what works with each individual case.
