How Japan has almost eradicated gun crime - BBC News

I thought this was interesting, it's about how Japan has made it almost impossible
    to own a gun.

    Two bits stood out though:

Japanese police officers rarely use guns and put much greater emphasis on
martial arts - all are expected to become a black belt in judo. They spend more
time practising kendo (fighting with bamboo swords) than learning how to use
    firearms.

"The response to violence is never violence, it's always to de-escalate it. Only
six shots were fired by Japanese police nationwide [in 2015]," says journalist
Anthony Berteaux. "What most Japanese police will do is get huge futons and
essentially roll up a person who is being violent or drunk into a little burrito and
carry them back to the station to calm them down."

I read this and it just got me wondering where do the police put those futons, do they carry
them on their hip. Do they use those judo skills to wrap up the criminals.

Brings a whole new meaning to a spring roll.

I would ask if violent crimes/acts are reported?

Guns are not the only weapon that can be used in the commission of a violent crime/attack.........just saying........

Now, had they ELIMINATED all violent crime/attacks..........THAT WOULD be something!

Does it matter if one is killed by a bullet or by a swift chop to the throat or just under the nose driving the hard cartledge up into the brain? Or being strangled? Or beaten to death with a bamboo sword?

Well, at least you can run away from a man with a sword (if you are fit enough.... uh-oh ... ok, I'll surrender )

I tried to ask Google , what it told me was just about the US: 1091 killed by the police in 2016

It probably has less to do with Japanese government policy and more to do with their historical preference for stabby cutty weapons, pristine social harmony, and authoritarian rulers.

I admire the Japanese, but I wouldn't want to be a citizen of Japan on a good day.

Actually the "new" Klingon they dreamed up for the Motion Pictures and later TNG was largely based on Japanese and Norse warrior cultures.

You can even see it in his armor, actually. It resembles a samurai. That bat'leth he's carrying is based on some other Eastern arm that didn't come into common use because it was often more dangerous to the user than the person they were trying to kill.

Japan needs to accept some Muslim refugees then. More than the 150 Syrians they're to receive over 5 years too.

I read that marriage was on the decline in Japan. Maybe that has something to do with it.

So many people want to limit who can BUY a gun, but NOT who may have possession of one.

Yeah, Japan is a completely different culture.

It's fine to take a look at what they're doing,
but that doesn't necessarily mean it would work anywhere else.

Come on, in Japan people don't even raise their voices in public.

What I have found/read with a search seems to support that Japan does have a very low crime rate per capita compared to other Nations. There are also many reasons for this given in the Articles I read, and some of them make sense, given the social structure of Japan, and how it's peoples are raised/educated.

A couple of the Articles found below:

Number of reported crimes in Japan fell to postwar low in 2015 |...

The secret of Japan's mysteriously low crime rate -...

The second one has a very interesting comment towards the end........may be a "clue" worthy of consideration?

What are most disturbing are however arguments that the low crime is partially a result of a police culture that are obsessed with keeping crime statistics low. Former detectives claim that police is unwilling to investigate homicides unless there is a clear suspects and frequently labels unnatural deaths as suicides without performing autopsies. Coincidentally, Japan has one of the highest suicide rates in the world.

Japan was a conquered country. They can be conquered again quite easily because the citizens or better subjects have no means of defending themselves from enemies foreign or domestic.

You beat me to it.... that is a huge factor in the crime rate. Their whole culture is geared toward respect and "honor". There are few "outside" influences to that culture.

If a whole subculture of ANY other race/nationality were placed in Japan, I imagine the crime rate would rise dramatically.

Er, there is a huge sub-culture in Japan,

I guess as the crimes of the US military are brushed under the carpet, the crime rate stays static.
