It's extremely rare where I am at for anyone to be civil committed for more than 72 hours at a time. A person would have to commit a violent felony, and then be found incompetent to be placed in a facility for any longer. Here in Virginia, it's a revolving door. The police find a guy who seems to be a danger to himself or others, he is then put in a hospital for 72 hours by a magistrate, he gets booted out after 3 days, then repeat.
