WASHINGTON (AP) -- Republicans won Senate confirmation of President Donald Trump's choice for health secretary early Friday in the testy chamber's fourth consecutive brawl over Cabinet picks.
Senators approved Rep. Tom Price, R-Ga., to head the Health and Human Services Department by a strictly party-line 52-47 vote in the dead of night. A debate that Democrats prolonged until nearly 2 a.m. EST Friday was dotted with bitter accusations, reflecting the raw feelings enveloping Washington early in Trump's presidency.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Tom Price, M.D. (GA-06), introduced the Empowering Patients First Act (H.R. 2300) today, which would permanently repeal President Obama’s health care law and replace it with patient-centered solutions. He previously sponsored the Empowering Patients First Act in the 111th and 112th Congresses as H.R. 3400 and H.R. 3000, respectively.

“President Obama’s health care law violates every principle of health care that Americans hold dear: accessibility, affordability, choices, innovation, quality and responsiveness,” Rep. Price said. “The law threatens the doctor-patient relationship. It empowers Washington bureaucrats at the expense of quality health care choices, and quite simply, the federal government should not be interfering with the most personal decisions in the lives of the American people.”

“The status quo in health care is unacceptable. We know that far too many people suffer because they are unable to access the quality care and coverage they desperately need,” Rep. Price said. “We know and have already seen that interference from Washington is not the solution. Instead, the Empowering Patients First Act returns health care decisions to patients, families and doctors, so that they, not government, can make choices rooted in compassion and common sense.”

After fully repealing President Obama’s health care law, the Empowering Patients First Actwould replace it with solutions guided by four main objectives: ensure access to health coverage for all Americans; rein in out-of-control costs; solve insurance challenges of portability and pre-existing illness; and improve the health care delivery structure.

Rep. Tom Price, M.D, represents Georgia’s Sixth Congressional District and serves as vice chairman of the House Committee on the Budget. He is also a member of the House Committee on Ways and Means, as well as the House Committee on Education and the Workforce. An orthopaedic surgeon, Dr. Price spent more than two decades caring for patients in the metro Atlanta area.

NOTE: An independent review of the Empowering Patients First Act has estimated the legislation would save $1.7 trillion while reducing health care premium increases. The estimate was produced by former Congressional Budget Office Director Douglas Holtz-Eakin. Click here to read the report.
