Starbucks’ unicorn drink is pushing adults to the edge of insanity

By Lauren Steussy

Usually, toddlers have the monopoly on sugar-related hissy fits. But fully grown adults gave them a run for their money during this week’s Unicorn Frappuccino hysteria.

Starbucks employees are still reeling from what many described as their worst day on the job, after hoards of customers demanded the color-changing beverage with 76 grams of sugar.

Supplies ran out, tempers ran high and an evil side of humanity was on full display. One barista posted on Reddit, “Honestly, the number of grown-ass human beings throwing temper tantrums was disgusting. You’re grown, get a hobby.” Another recalled how “a grown woman screamed when we told her we don’t have any more.”

Yet another barista explained how, after telling an actual fully formed man that there were no Unicorn Frappuccinos left, the man “told me to ‘get lost’ over the speaker, then proceeded to do a poorly executed burnout in my drive-thru right beside a car full of friendly teenagers that were not upset over us not having the Unicorn Frappuccino, and instead ordered reasonable drink.

One poor intern reported being sent out for coffee by her boss and getting an order of seven Unicorn Frappuccinos. Because nothing says authority quite like whipped cream that has been sprinkled with pink and blue fairy powders.

It’s not exactly surprising that coveters of mythical-creature-themed Frappuccinos might be lacking in the maturity department. But if you think being denied said frapp warrants a full-on temper tantrum, it’s time for a good, hard look in the mirror.

Unicorn Frappuccinos are not some kind of treat for “adulting.” They are 11 grams of saturated fat and an infantile escape from reality.
Also, they don’t even have coffee in them.

I think the name is something to do with the lgbt. Because they promote calling people "unicorns" and well Starbucks... is a liberal business I've heard. So I'm guessing this product is called "unicorn" cos of that, not 100% sure if it's why though.

Looks disgusting too, just look at the top of it, and the sprinkles. It must be SO unhealthy
The Unicorn Frappuccino may be pretty to look at, but it's loaded with 59 grams of sugar! That is over two times the amount of sugar recommended by the American Heart Association!”

That statement likely shocked few fans, as the Unicorn Frappuccino contains four kinds of syrup, according to its ingredients label — Frappuccino syrup (Water, Sugar, Salt, Natural And Artificial Flavor, Xanthan Gum, Potassium Sorbate, Citric Acid); Mango Syrup (Sugar, Water, Mango Juice Concentrate, Natural Flavor, Passion Fruit Juice Concentrate, Citric Acid, Potassium Sorbate, Turmeric, Gum Arabic); Vanilla Syrup (Sugar, Water, Natural Flavors, Potassium Sorbate, Citric Acid) and Classic Syrup (Sugar, Water, Natural Flavors, Potassium Sorbate, Citric Acid). The calorie count is also high, at 410 per 16 fluid-ounce serving.

However, the drink’s 59 grams of sugar only doubles the American Heart Association daily recommendation for women, which is 25 grams of sugar per day. For men, the AHA recommends no more than 36 grams a day — still considerably less than the sweetness packed into this latest Starbucks treat. http://www.mysanantonio.com/local/article/Stratford-Health-Department-says-No-to-11092791.php

That is actually SHOCKING.

A 500ml bottle of Coca Cola contains 27 grams of Sugar. Now this "frapucino" is smaller than a 500ml coca cola bottle AND contains over DOUBLE the amount of sugar.

You could get 2 500ml bottles of Coca Cola and STILL consume less sugar than you would with just ONE of those "frapucinos".

The unicorn frapucino is the path to diabetes, it shouldn't even be legal.

.....I kinda think it looks pretty cool : p
Would try it, haha.
I have tried similar stuff before... not for me lol, not my thing. But different people have different tastes :) maybe you would like it :) although the sugar amount is ALARMING though, maybe as a treat in really rare times if someone would drink it.

It is pretty, yes :) But the ingredients... yuck haha.

I hardly ever even drink pop, so it is unlikely I'll be trying one of these :D

Looks neat though, I like trying fun new stuff like that. I definitely wouldnt become angry and take it out on the employees if they didnt have it though, geeeesh. Thats not cool or acceptable at all.

Starbucks employees hate having to make it, because it is complicated to concoct and therefore overly time consuming, plus they end up stained from the dyes. They are glad it will only be available until Sunday. Jimmy Kimmel called the beverage Starbucks' "latest abomination" while Stephen Colbert dubbed it a "sugary affront to God." Even the New Yorker got in on the anti-unicorn backlash, posting a cartoon featuring a unicorn trying to order a simple scotch at the bar.

Didn't the starbucks executive say they where going to employ 10,000 Syrian refugees in support of obamas policy of bringing in the islamic jihadists from Syria?

I thought they got hit with a boycott and their share price was really hurt?

I guess them suffering this kind of craziness is all part and parcel with them only getting crazy leftist PC, feminist costumers now???

Ew, that sounds like alot of dye. I often hear by people who work in the food industry say that if you were to actually see the foods they make, you wouldnt want to eat it.

My little brother would tell you to never touch the chili at Steak 'n Shake.

I mean, its just a colorful drink. That kind of stuff appeals to some people. Im none of those things and I think it looks cool.

Its totally a cash grab : p I dont think its sinister in nature though, besides maybe being unhealthy.

Who says there is no such thing as bad press? Heh. Welp, I don't ever even set foot in Starbucks unless I am hanging for a coffee and nothing else is available. That is rare. At least in my neighborhood, there are quite a few choices, and I may even go out of my way to buy organic fair trade. My daughter bought me a pumpkin spice latte from Starbucks once and I gagged on it repeatedly before I gave up drinking it completely :p She likes those, but would not go for a unicorn drink.
