    Default AHCA

So, I've been hanging around my usual selection of health forums, and the top post is about this Act passing congress. There are so many things being said.

Some of it includes pre-existing conditions like pregnancy and hysterectomies will not be covered. I thought the second one was a procedure, but my bad. Or mental health! (Put those crazies back on the street!) Other rumours include that spouses now covered under their spouses work plan, will not be able to collect. Some think Medicaid and Medicare will be exactly the same, nothing to worry about. Apparently Erectile Dysfunction is covered, but women's issues, like pregnancy are not! (And to think I thought Republicans were pro-family!)

My RA friends are freaked out about the cost of meds. I can't blame them, RA is horrible disease and the drugs are expensive in the US. Even in Canada, it would pretty well take my whole pension to cover my drugs.

    So what is happening?

PS. I was a bit surprised to not see this be a thread on here, unless I missed it. But then, no, most of you are healthy, Republicans, not thinking about things that might happen to make them pre-existing, too!

It doesn't really do anything to help the true problem with health care in this country, which is the horrifically high price of healthcare. Both this bill and Obamacare are basically trying to put band-aids on the rickety unsustainable dysfunctional mess that is the current American healthcare system. It's all about trying to please insurance companies and not about figuring out how to bring down the price of healthcare in the first place. What we need to do is look around at some other countries and see how they handle their healthcare systems. It doesn't have to be single payer. There are plenty of countries that have free market friendly healthcare systems (like Singapore) that are far more successful than the mess we have.

You do not have obligatory health/social insurance in Canada?
Do not be worried about many things - only one thing is needed (Lk 10:41-42).

Most Democrats (and some Republicans) are becoming Socialists. Socialism means the government pays for everything for everyone. Americans are being convinced this is what they MUST have.

Unfortunately, everyone wants other people to pay the taxes for all this... NOT them. And that ain't gonna happen.

Why do Americans always go to extremes? And I ask this as an American. It doesn't have to be a choice between completely socialized healthcare or completely free market healthcare (which we've never actually had since it's impossible to shop around for healthcare). There are plenty of countries that have successful healthcare systems that stick to a balance between the two extremes.

    One answer. MEDIA.
The media has been creating news, trends, desires..... and basically running the country for many years. And we seem to love it.

Have you ever noticed that our desire to have the Media give us ultimate knowledge, frighteningly parallels the same desire Eve hoped to satisfy by eating from The Tree of The Knowledge of Good and Evil?

Health insurance does not cover the cost of medications or anything outside of doctor/clinic//hospital care. You need extended medical for that, but even then, there are ceilings, such as, you only get a certain percentage of the cost of meds reimbursed, for example, and only up to so much covered per year. Don't let anyone tell you our regular health care is free, either. I see people saying that occasionally, and it is quite disturbing to see such gross misinformation being bandied about.

We have had universal health since the 1960s. Alberta first had a provincial program in 1951. By 1961, there was some kind of coverage in almost every province. In 1984, the Canada Health Act resulted in complete coverage and standardized coverage for all Canadians in every province. There are differences between provinces, but in the end, the Federal government requires the same coverage, and no extras billing. (That has a few loopholes!)

Health care is free in every province but BC. I think we pay $85 a month, it comes directly off my husband's pension check. Right now we have a provincial election going on, and getting rid of premiums has been a big debate. The payments are graduated. If you are poor, you pay nothing. Not sure what the cut off is for having to pay.

We also have drug coverage, which is voluntary and differs from province to province. When we moved to BC from Alberta 2 years ago, I was convinced Alberta had a better drug plan. Now, I have crunched the numbers and Fair Pharmacare is much cheaper for me. It is also graduated, depending on income. Those who make more, have a higher deductible, plus 70% coverage kicks in first, then 100% coverage. I got 100% coverage by the middle of February, which shows how expensive my meds are.

One final thing is that neither health care nor drug programs are mandatory or compulsory. A lot of people don't sign up for the drug program. But if you need no medicines, then why would you? And why wouldn't you sign up for health care that is free?

The problem with these Republicans is that they are not in touch with reality. Everyone ends up sick, sooner or later. And if not sick, then in an accident, or the victim of crime. I was completely healthy until one day when I was 33 a drunk driver rammed our car from behind. My husband and our boys were fine. But I had my head bent at a funny angle as we merged, and got a terrible whiplash injury which tore all the tendons and ligaments on the right side of my neck. I was in agony, and all the physiotherapists and chiropractors couldn't fix it. Lifting weights helped, although at times I cannot lift weights when the RA is flaring. I started getting sick soon after that accident, and there has been a huge cascade effect. (I'm still in a lot of pain from the whiplash injury and I guess I will always be!)

Again, American health care is about profit for the companies who run it. In Canada, health care is a service everyone contributes to, and everyone gets. Since health care has been around for 66 years (I was born and raised in Alberta), we have figured out how to have a system that everyone uses. Put it another way, socialized or more correctly universal health care run by the givernment works a lot better than the hodge-podge private system the US has! And yes, our taxes do pay for the system, but it is our number one value, and any politician trying to cut back on transfer payments to the provinces for health care, gets booted out the back door immediately.

Its hard to go to these health forums and FB too, and see the worry many people have with the pre-existing condition clauses.

And another thing that confuses me is why anything to do with female sexuality including pregnancy and a hysterectomy is excluded, but erectile dysfunction in men is covered. It's seems obvious a bunch of fat old impotent men wrote the bill, but made sure their drug of choice was included!

According to healthcare they would like us women to walk three steps behind the men at all times... Seems as though they are acting like people get hatched...

Guess we better keep our legs crossed ladies so we don't get pregnant... and thanking the stars above I already had a hysterectomy so won't have to worry about that little issue...

Everyone needs to look at health insurance for what it is... to help people when they get sick and figure out ways to cure them of these super bugs that are working away from any antibiotics we have to kill them... instead of treating health care like a profit center.... it isn't suppose to make money it's suppose to help us stay healthy... and alive to be able to live quality lives.

But then all those insurance executives would have to stop making hundreds of thousands and millions of dollars each year with bonuses....oh wait... we have nothing but billion and millionaires in the white house now... fat chance of any real solutions when they are all looking at the bottom line of business reports instead of how to run a country and serve the people...

I don't think it's being discussed because everyones presuming it won't pass in the Senate. If it did I'm seeing that Medicare would pretty much remain the same, but not Medicaid. As you said, concerning the cost of meds , THAT really would be devastating. Out national healthcare system would be Go Fund Me lol. I KNOW a lot of people see Socialism as a dirty word but have no problem accepting Social Security checks. And our country has recently praised Australia for their health care system , yet they wouldn't dream of having Universal healthcare like Australia has. Doctors have told me that Insurance dictates what patients may or may not be approved of in terms of percriptions , almost tying the doctors hands on how to treat patients. My Doctor said he is seeing a lot of doctors just retiring early cause they are tired of dealing with insurance companies. They can't be doctors ! Either way you spin it, it definitely isn't working for everybody. But for now, I think Obama care will hold till the next go round when they petition for changes.

I currently work in the healthcare industry and there are so many people that don't know or understand it, yet assume they do. People just need to educate themselves on what medical insurance is and what the coverage is and not take it at face value. If they knew this, they would have never supported Obama and his control over medical insurance in the first place
