    Default Beware of Avocados

Doctor's are now pressing for labels on avocados. Seems people don't realize that they can cut their hand when removing the seed.

    Avocado Warning Labels

    What about apples or cherries?

I can't cut my hand with a cherry pitter or an apple corer? lol

I think they should put labels on oysters too. Even the ones in the sea, because Dad has cut his hand opening one up the moment he brought it onto the boat.

I guess that people today don't realize that a knife can cut a finger or hand. I doubt that reading a label will help them.

My grandmother had a knack for shucking oysters. She always wore a thick rubber glove on her left hand, and used her shucking knife in her right hand. She could keep up with a half dozen kids eating them on the half shell, and still drop a few into a bowl for stew.

Those were the good ole days. My doctor won't let me eat them raw anymore. I'm thinking about changing doctors, but I can't find one who will agree with me.

I've eaten and cooked with avocados all my long life. Never once have I ever been injured cutting them open or removing the seed. Never. Just be careful when handling it and enjoy it in good health.

Seriously, those folks need to listen to Bill Engvall's comedy routine about stupid people, and the warning labels that have been created because of them.

They are a little bland, and buttery tasting.... until you make guacamole out of them...

or, eat them with scrambled eggs, or on a sandwich... or..... well, I guess you can tell I like avocados...

but, I also think lobster is a little bland....

They are. Which is why they are good in so many ways! . My favourite way to eat them is sliced, sprinkled with salt and lime juice. YUMMY!

Oh they're ripe, but considering I live in the frozen north land (sorta...) they are probably shipped a long way and they probably keep the best for themselves .

    Nutrient All-Star

Avocados offer nearly 20 vitamins and minerals in every serving, including potassium (which helps control blood pressure), lutein (which is good for your eyes), and folate (which is crucial for cell repair and during pregnancy).
Avocados are a good source of B vitamins, which help you fight off disease and infection. They also give you vitamins C and E, plus natural plant chemicals that may help prevent cancer.
Avocados are low in sugar. And they contain fiber, which helps you feel full longer. In one study, people who added a fresh avocado half to their lunch were less interested in eating during the next three hours.

I do know that avocados have doubled in price over the past 8-10 months at the WalMart neighborhood market by my house.

I don't buy them there anymore.

I just went through this one with hubby last night, you are allowed to dismiss doctor's orders.

True. If you do that, you might not live for another 50 years, but then again, even if you did...? lol

Dad had to work out in Southern California for a couple of years, and it seemed the only thing people ate out there was salads and seafood. So, he did too. (He eats seafood wherever he lives. lol) He was also the type of guy who never gained weight. Suddenly, he was gaining weight rapidly.

He had to ask why, since he was eating mostly salads. His friends nailed it -- avocados. Very fattening food.

Bland? I kind of think of them as cardboard egg cartons soaked in fat. I don't get the appeal. There is always bacon if you like "soaked in fat."
