Yes, and often they wrest scripture to suit their own spiritual narrative.

I know I am the master of doing that in many areas of life, not just here on CC, and not just with theological stuff either. I think most are masters of justifying our own points of view, and even sins. "If you only knew what I've been through you'd understand why I'm this way/did that", this is my own mental battle cry far too often, and honestly after any reflection at all, not a good excuse.
    Fenner and dcontroversal like this.

I find this to be very true because, God used me losing all function in my right arm after a motorcycle wreak to lead me to Himself, Truth, and Salvation.

For me the first part of becoming a Christian is when I asked forgiveness from Jesus for my past sinful life, thanked Him for dying on the cross for me, and asking the Holy Spirit to live in my heart and to change the direction of my life to the path God would have me take. Becoming a Christian is a life long spiritual journey.
Honestly that assessment goes right along with what Jesus told us as far as the amount of people you've met that act the way Jesus calls us to.
    He says in Matthew 7:22-23
22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?
23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.

This by the way, to me, is the scariest verse in the Bible. I also know personally how one can profess to be a Christian, even sit in the pews every week honestly thinking I was, and even knew what, a Christian is. Jesus also tells us in
    John 3:1-8
3 Now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. 2 This man came to Jesus[a] by night and said to him, “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher come from God, for no one can do these signs that you do unless God is with him.” 3 Jesus answered him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again[b] he cannot see the kingdom of God.” 4 Nicodemus said to him, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother's womb and be born?” 5 Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. 6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.[c] 7 Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You[d] must be born again.’ 8 The wind[e] blows where it wishes, and you hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.”

This is what I was talking about in the comment you were responding to, and I agree with you that not many do act this way. I know I COULDN'T behave as Jesus commands us at all, without Him empowering me through the indwelling of His Holy Spirit. I know how I acted without God, I know how I acted when I thought I was a Christian and wasn't, and I know now how, and only by His grace and through His power, I have behaved after truly being filled with His very real and undeserved Spirit. That is why I have the audacity to proclaim these things the way I do and how I can KNOW that someone that slaughters people in His name is no true Christian.

So while I do agree with your points on roughly how we seek God and are saved by His power and mercy, I also have to stand firm on the fact we must be born again, a supernatural event that God does to us. This was just a point I feel could use a lot more attention even in our church houses today, and a major misunderstanding I personally had for years even going to church and hearing His word. That's why I tend to stress it so hard. LOL, but honestly that was just a super long way of me saying "I agree".
