If Sanders or Sekulow released inaccurate statements without consulting Trump or through misunderstanding Trump, then Trump could have come out and said it. He didn't. He was perfectly happy to have the public believe a lie about him. As the President of the United States it's his duty to speak out if he's misrepresented; not doing so is just as deceptive as if he were saying it himself. As far as Sekulow and Sanders...first of all, it would be political suicide to make a statement on behalf of the president without checking with him first. Second of all, they represent the President of the United States. They have the authority to speak on his behalf in these situations. They need to be held to a higher standard than most lawyers because a misconstrued statement could lead to riots or war. It's Donald Trump's job to uphold this standard. So even if they misrepresented him, it's still Donald Trump who allowed the people to be deceived.
That being said, past behavior predicts present and future behavior. Donald Trump has lied and acted unethically for decades. He acted so during the campaign. And there's no reason to leap through hoops to try to imagine scenarios where he's doing differently now.
