Good article that teaches what the Prosperity Message is, (and it included WoFers and dominionist, along with the show-me-the-moneyers), where it goes wrong, how it got its foothold, and what to do about it.

You may be tempted to read only part of it, but it's very good all the way to the end.

The Prosperity Gospel: A Global Epidemic

Not sure if this counts as "news," but I was sure if I put it on BDF, all it would do was have everyone pointing at everyone else, so the ones promoting the message and the ones against it would seem the same.

erm, no one wants to hear this, but last year i heard Conrad Mbewe, a Zambian pastor, beg America to stop exporting the prosperity gospel to Africa. he claims it is hurting their people much more than anything else.

Yeah. Many Africans are sending missionaries over to the country that needs them the most -- the USA.

John was reading the story of one missionary. He's American, but spent a decode being a missionary in Africa, before the Lord called him to a new missionary field -- the Bible Belt. He said it was infinitely harder to evangelize to people who already assume they are Christians simply because they were born into "a Christian family."

I took that to mean maybe being a missionary in Haiti isn't that tough. ;)

guess that's why 'real' American missionaries are a rare-breed,
in their 'own-country'.?.?.

one thing about our area (once dubbed 'the devil's playground' by a visiting pastor) is there's so much cultural pushback against Christianity you can be pretty sure the people who get to their church mean it. (YMMV)

when my sister moved from PA to NC, she was surprised at the mission field that opened up. cultural "Christianity" is really just moralism. now i made myself sad.

My Greek prof does a lot of pastor training in Africa. He says it is utterly pathetic what has happened to the gospel. People are bringing in their goats so they can become rich Americans. And, the prosperity teachers can't fulfill their promises (not God's!) because the poverty is grinding.

We have exported a false gospel to third world countries. I suppose, that is because, as others have said, the true gospel is so in decline in North America, there remains few to actually take the real gospel to these countries.
