White supremacist Richard Spencer to speak at the University of Florida. The Governor, in order to allow state to provide the campus with the additional security assets, has declared a state of emergency.

Richard Spencer's University of Florida Speech: What to Expect | Time.com

Security alone for a one day event is expected to exceed $500,000. I don't know about you, but I sent my children and grandchildren to college for an education, not to listen to radical people rant about what is wrong with the country. Why don't we stop allowing ALL these (?) exercises in free speech (left, right, or in the middle) and return the students to the classroom?

I hope that every student will stay as far away from the speech as they can get. The best protest that they can mount is zero attendance.

While I think that a university should provide a well rounded education, college students are not getting that at all, from what I've seen.

Most, if not all universities have become indoctrination centers for leftist thinking. In the past few years, we've seen students on campuses actually riot to prevent any conservative thinking speaker from presenting "their" side.

If these speeches/presentations are done outside the classroom, I'm not sure why we should stop it.

What SHOULD happen is strict enforcement of behavior guidelines.... if rowdy students try to "shout down" a speaker, or riot to prevent the speech from happening, they should be immediately removed and prosecuted, if they have done something prosecutable.

While I disagree completely with the concept of "white supremacy", they should have the right to speak, if the university has allowed BLM, or ANTIFA, or any of the other radical leftist groups to speak. There should be "equal time" allowed.

Sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander....

I do not support Spencer----But if they stop allowing ALL such stupid ideas to be expressed , they would have to silence 99.9% of all professors at these universities.

If a speaker needs an abnormal amount of security, I think the whole issue of who should be paying for it is a reasonable topic for debate.

The problem here is probably not the nut who's speaking, but a lot of bad policy issues that lead to this kind of mess.

Obviously, the underlying policy issues are NOT being addressed.

Not to mention the fact that Richard Spencer isn't really all that clever or interesting.

There's just a lot of stupidity all the way around.

1. The university allows this extraordinarily non-exceptional lightening rod to come and speak... and they probably could have just found any number of loopholes to avoid it.

2. The university seems wholly incapable of managing their own student population.

3. The governor declares a state of emergency to pay for something stupid, which can ONLY be seen as intentionally creating a political football... there are many other ways to deal with this.

4. There are underlying policies, from finances to speaker criterion to location issues... all of which might be addressed to resolve this and similar problems in the future. And... we can be sure none of the pertinent issues will be addressed.

5. Without even investigating, I would assume this situation was created by the university, and various political groups, to change some particular policy which actually does NOT need to be changed, while ignoring more significant issues.

It all just sounds ridiculous, and it wreaks of inept politicians playing their typical games.

How screwed up is the University of Florida that they'd even think about bringing in a White Supremacist speaker in the first place?

Agreed. Let them show just how 'bright' they are. Let them shove their feet in their mouths.

Found this 2016 article the other day from Boston Magazine where a journalist did a study of college professors in the New England area (northeastern part of the US... think 'Tom Brady and the Patriots' football team) and found that liberal college professors outnumber conservative ones by as much as 28 to 1!

How Liberal Professors Are Ruining College

While I in no way, shape or form agree with anything Mr Spencer says or believes, I do think that its benefical for people to listen to all beliefs, opinions and ideas and be able to form their own through it. An exchange of ideas is absolutely a part of University.

Do I think the security is overkill? Definitely, but honselty, Id blame the radicals on the progressive left for that, with their destruction of property and attacking other individuals merely cuz a right wing speaker has come to their college to share their views with anyone who will listen, as well as answer questions from those who disagree.

Spencer is not a good guy for anyone to learn from, we can agree on that. But even then, theres still good in listening to him. Listen to learn why hes wrong, and how to argue his points for anyone who feels they may be relating to what he says to help them turn from it.

That would probably be a good thing.

Has anyone considered that while this person is an idiot, he may NOT be the biggest problem at UF?

Seems to me that if such drastic security measures are required to be put in place just to allow some wingnut to spew his/her particular brand of hatred, that JUST MAYBE the problem lies with the Student Body who would react in a violent way to that speech. They don't appear to have a problem with haters from their side speaking anytime, anywhere, and it also appears that the same drastic measures are not needed when THOSE hate filled bigots speak.

Hmm..................
