And I agree with hipster that punishing someone for attempting suicide, which is generally the target outcome by design, clearly amounts to "cruel and unusual punishment," a violation of the 8th and 14th amendments. So two wrongs don't make a right. Manning lasted 7 years into a 35 years sentence, also "cruel and unusual punishment."

Modern institutions of confinement are not designed to reform people; They are strategically and psychologically designed to annihilate the last remnants of a person's humanity, make them hopelessly institutionalized and welfare-dependent even after short periods of time.
