Trump has delivered big for the pro-life movement

By Marjorie Dannenfelser

January 18, 2018 | 7:12pm

As President Trump closes out his first year in office, it’s worth taking stock of the commitments he made as a candidate to protect life, the first among our rights as Americans and human beings, at every stage — unborn children included. Those commitments, outlined in a letter to pro-life movement leaders in September of 2016, were:

  • Nominating pro-life justices to the US Supreme Court;
  •  Defunding Planned Parenthood as long as they continue to perform abortions and reallocating their funding to community health centers that provide comprehensive health care for women;
  •  Making the Hyde Amendment permanent law to protect taxpayers from having to pay for abortions; and
  •  Signing into law the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act, which would end painful late-term abortions nationwide.
Our hopes were well-founded. Over the last year President Trump has worked diligently to fulfill his commitments.

The greatest triumph was the appointment of Supreme Court Justice Neil Gorsuch. Gorsuch, whose stellar qualifications are apparent to all but the most partisan ideologues, was an inspired choice.

Furthermore, Trump has been busy filling the benches of lower federal courts with outstanding judges like Amy Coney Barrett, Joan Larsen and many more. Despite pro-abortion obstruction in the Senate, he has set a record for the most circuit court confirmations in the first year of any president.

One of Trump’s first acts in office was to reinstate the pro-life Mexico City Policy, which prevents organizations like the International Planned Parenthood Federation from using US tax dollars to promote abortion on-demand overseas. This has been a tradition for Republican presidents since Ronald Reagan, but in characteristic form, Trump didn’t settle for meeting expectations — he exceeded them. His administration expanded this policy so it applies to all foreign health aid, more than $8 billion.

Trump also achieved an early victory by signing legislation to roll back Barack Obama’s last “parting gift” to Planned Parenthood, a rule that forbade states from redirecting tax dollars away from the nation’s largest abortion business to comprehensive health care alternatives that outnumber Planned Parenthood facilities and can meet the health needs of women and families in ways the abortion industry doesn’t even try.

While Congress’ action is needed to get taxpayers out of the abortion industry altogether, Trump’s Justice Department, led by Attorney General Jeff Sessions, confirmed last month that the abortion giant is under investigation for its role in the harvesting and sale of aborted babies’ body parts for profit. Under Obama, we could only dream of this.

Finally, under Trump we are closer than ever to ending cruel late-term abortions. The Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act has passed the House of Representatives and the steeper climb will be in the Senate, but we fight on knowing Trump fully supports the bill and will sign it without hesitation should Congress send it to his desk.

If all Trump did was work to fulfill his four major promises, he would already be the most pro-life president we have ever seen — but he shows no sign of stopping there.

The Trump administration gave relief to groups like the Little Sisters of the Poor, as well as groups like ours with moral objections, from being forced to provide abortion-inducing drugs and devices in their health plans; challenged pro-abortion bias in politics and in the media and much more. The White House door is open to the pro-life movement again after being firmly shut for eight years, and most important, the president is listening and taking our concerns seriously.

While there is still more work to be done and action needed in Congress, Trump’s first year has been one of monumental successes, and we’d gladly rally the pro-life grassroots to support him all over again.

Marjorie Dannenfelser is the president of Susan B. Anthony List and served as national chair of Donald Trump’s Pro-life Coalition in the 2016 election.

It amazed me that during the campaign some Christians here proposed voting for HC and were adamantly against Trump. As a Christian if there were only one reason to vote for Trump this was it.

Over a year later I am still stunned any Christian would consider for even a second for voting for any pro abortion candidate.

In the USA there has been 60 million abortions since Roe V Wade. That's quite a bit more the current entire population of Canada.
Planned Murder hood, I mean planned parent hood, has performed almost 8 million of them since 1970.

We are on pace for about 720,000 abortions in the USA this year. Out of that number about 7200 are from rape or incest. Or about 1% is due to rape or incest.

That's about 15,000 abortions a week here.
Or over 2,000 dead babies a day...

World wide there are about 880,000 abortions every week.

Anyone who thinks the end is not near, recheck your bible.

Number of Abortions in US & Worldwide - Number of abortions since 1973

Who proposed voting for Hillary?
Sometimes Trump does things that make me wish that I had voted for him. These are some of those times.
I just hope that he does well enough to get someone even better elected after his term(s).

We must give the devil his due. When he does something right, I have no problem saying so. I also don't have a problem blasting him though. :D

Methinks you be giving him a wee bit more credit than he has earned.

1) Gorsuch he did nominate........BUT......he completely failed to get ONE SINGLE VOTE to confirm Gorsuch from among the Democrats. Were it not for old Mitch pulling the trigger on the nuclear option, Gorsuch would NOT be a Supreme Court Justice today.......soooo, credit due to old Mitch.........

2) As for defunding Planned Parrenthood, thus dealing a death blow to the abortion mills, all he managed to do was sign a Executive Order to defunding support for FOREIGN Governments/Organizations that practice abortion. Not a single worry for Planned Parenthood here in the USA.........soooo, Pretty sure his promise was to DEFUND Planned Parenthood HERE.

3) The Courts did help the Little Sisters......so kudos there, and they have helped SOM business owners in their right to deny service to folks who violate their Christian beliefs......again, kudos, but Trump himself has been mostly silent on all of this. I don't think it has been his HOT BUTTON TWITTER issue for some time...........just saying :)

4) As for the latest Tax Bill, again it was the Congress who got this done.........a compromise betwixt the House and Senate ideas, and some hard work from the House and Senate Leadership got it done in the 11th Hour.

Go back to the week before the passage of the Bill and review Trumps TWITTER activity.......lemme know how much he focused on the passage of the Tax Bill?

anyway........he has signed some Executive Orders that have had some good effects, especially on the Economy, but other than that.......meh...........NO WALL BUILT........NO HEALTHCARE TO REPLACE OBAMACARE which is STILL the Law of the Land......AND....the VA is STILL in need of MUCHO work to get it worthy of complimenting.......Gay and Lesbian Rights continue to grow and flourish as do transgender rights.....and many other Social Issues he spoke about during the Campaign......and, btw........there are STILL millions and millions of illegals here.........and I am speaking of illegals with criminal records......soooooooo meh.....

This being said, he is still better than what we would have had Hillary won

I think it is no coincidence these things got done once he became president. He probably deserves, proportionately sealing, most of the credit.

Selecting Gorsuch was enough to get credit in my book.

Trump was the FIRST president in history to address the ProLife march, can't accuse him of playing the middle, this man follows his convictions ;)

No. I do think that.

A. There are more people who are inclined toward being Pro-Life than Pro-Choice at this point in time.

B. He has no hope of pleasing neoliberals/progressives because they see him as a sort of antichrist. Even if religious and social conservatives were an important minority, they would be worth pleasing to maintain his political coalition.

I'm not casting aspersions on his motives. Just pointing out there are practical political considerations I'm sure he's considered.

In our community, we had over 1500 people at our first annual right to life arm to arm demonstration. Just over twenty years later, there were fewer than 25. I see that as most people no longer care. If you believe any other way, tell me what that means.

There is some truth to that.

But a decent Supreme Court justice is no small gain. And while I share your analysis regarding McConnell, the fact remains Trump chose a Pro-Life originalist over more Progressive options (like his own sister).

Low expectations almost assure you will not be disappointed, but not sure you will gain much either

It means that events and demonstrations do not directly correlate with direction or fervency of public opinion.

Trump is seriously damaging the U.S., but at least he did some minor modifications on a pet social issue you like.
